Hello chess lovers,

after I have passively read along in this forum for a longer time and especially marvel at the beautiful chess sets, I would like to show some of my sets here and in the next posts.

I am from Germany and have been playing passionately for over 50 years. During this time I have accumulated a lot of books and sets

I am especially grateful to the forum for the suggestions and to the various manufacturers of noble but nevertheless affordable chess pieces.

Here my Chess pieces from East Germany (late 50s). Heavily weighted, King size 9,2 cm.

Hi! Are the 1950's East German sets still easily available? If so, how much do they usually sell for in good condition?

This set of pieces was probably sold in a limited edition at the Chess Olympiad in Leipzig 1960. I was able to buy this set at that time from an older chess friend during a visit in the former GDR. In the wooden box there is a reference to the Olympiad. It might be difficult to get this piece. I like them very much. Heavy weighted, original design.

Heavy tournament pieces in classic design.

King height 98 mm, weighted, boxwood/acacia

Board "Ulbrich Design". Birdseye maple/rosewood.

Ebony border.

Now a figure set from the category very inexpensive but still good.

Bought from Royal Chess Mal.

These figures fit perfectly on a board with 55 mm field size. They fit very well in the hand despite low weighting, are clearly arranged and I love the layered design.

The board is from RPF. The light fields of this board are made of maple, the dark fields of teak.

With a black figure set it is very comfortable to play. The board is available at Schach Niggemann for a ridiculous 60 EUR!

I like those a lot, do you mind sharing the link? I might buy it. happy.png

Yes, it sounds like they're a real rarity unfortunately. If you're interested in vintage Soviet sets, I have loads of them in new condition.

@StauntonCollector how many sets do you actually own? and please show any plastics sets bro

This is a good question! One reason for my postings here: I get an overview about the material which I have in my home tongue.png

My wife thinks it is too much, I have a different opinion ....grin.png

Hello,

here is the Teac board. Fine quality for a small price.

I have one but I lost it :/

I still own two simple tournament sets from Bohemia from the eighties.

I like the simple elegant design. Very clearly arranged!

With these figure sets all important international tournaments and matches were played in Germany.

These figures were used, for example, in the legendary mirror competition between Kasparov and Hübner in 1985.

https://en.chessbase.com/post/kasparov-and-thirty-years-of-computer-chess

The figures are made of maple, king height 95 mm and have a relatively moderate weighting.

The shown simple tournament boards have a field size of 58 mm. The dark board is made of maple and walnut, the folding board is made of maple and mahogany.

Also nice on this simple plastic board. What do you think?

These wooden boards are extremely inexpensive, but still very nice!

StauntonCollector

Must good quality chess pieces be expensive? Not absolutely!

Some months ago I bought this set of pieces shown below from Schach Niggemann.

The price including wooden box and shipping was only 56 EURO!

King height 95 mm, very well weighted and a beautiful classical design without any frills!

StauntonCollector

Below the set "Stallione".

These pieces were offered by Schach Niggemann, but are sold out now.

https://www.schachversand.de/figuren-stallion.html

This is a very well made set of figures in boxwood and ebony.

Without ornaments, simply rock solid and very heavily weighted.

I got some questions about the simple grey board. This board is made of PVC and was made for me at a printer. He simply screen printed the board on a PCV surface. So individual field designs are no problem and of course this method is also cheap.

StauntonCollector

Chessmen "Columbian Design "

King height 95 mm. Boxwood/ebony.

RPF board grey, field size 55 mm.

This is a great set, no question. Handcrafted very nice, but my taste has changed. In the meantime I prefer a rather simple design. I don't like too much details.

This also applies to some other pieces in my collection.

StauntonCollector

Schachfiguren " Imperial knight design "

https://www.niggemann.com/en/catalog/product/view/id/20880/s/chessmen-imperial-knight-design-reduces-price/category/408/

In the meantime I prefer a rather simple design. I don't like too much details anymore.

I respect the skill of the Indian craftsmen who make these figures. They look very good, but I don`t use them anymore.

This also applies to some other pieces in my collection.
