Purchasing a Chess Table for Office

Sort:

I recently moved into a new office. There is dedicated space for a chess table and chairs.

i have found a few wood tables that I like in the $400-$800 price range online. I am unsure about the optimal size of the squares.

i would like to purchase a high quality wood set of pieces. I expect that i may end up purchasing several sets over the years.  My first set may end up as a Noj Dubrovnik or Tal. But this could change.

Should I be looking for 2” or 2.25” squares? i would also appreciate any other suggestions regarding choosing and purchasing a table.

Since you're planning to use this as a display board for nice sets you should go no smaller than 2.25", since most nice, display sets are going to be too crowded on smaller boards.

First please bro adjust your Text. Secondly 2.25 is the square sizs you have to go with. I believe a NOJ 3.75" sets would be cramped on a 2" board. The HoS chess table at 2.375" is pretty much the ideal table. Ebough room on sides for a clock or book and space for putting your arms and elbows when leaning forward and analyzing.

Maybe wait for it to be restocked?

I remember when they had those HoS chess tables in stock advertised on the front homepage around November and thinking to myself what a beautiful table for such a decent price. There are currently not one, BUT TWO vintage Drueke chess tables on eBay. I think they would look amazing as a set in an office setting.

A board with 2.25inch squares will work well for your chosen set and a generously-sized desk.

Thank you for all of the suggestions.  I am definitely going to get 2.25 inch squares.

I wish that the HoS table was available.  I have been following it online for a few weeks.  Does anyone know the usual restock times, or have any information?

Otherwise, I think that the Vintage Drueke is probably my best bet.  I found a few tables on Etsy, but nothing as nice as the HoS or Drueke.

2.25 inch squares....absolutely!

The HoS would have been better with 2.375in squares. Sadly you're likely going to have to wait until the table is back in stock. You can email HoS to get an ETA.

Especially the suggestion to cut a square hole in a table to make your own chess table. This has the advantage that you could change the chess board later

Another option is to purchase a cheaper antique end table that is the size & configuration that you want and paint the board on top.  That's what I'm doing.  But I live in a victorian house and wanted a chess table that didn't look modern...
