Queen's Gambit Chess Set Harmon vs. Borgov

Sort:
KingOfTheBongcloud

Hello all!

I'm trying to find the chess set that is seen in the final game between Beth Harmon and Vasily Borgov. I believe that I have found the chess board but I have not been able to find the exact chess pieces that were shown in this scene. Any help would be greatly appreciated it!

Also, here is the chess board that I found: https://chessis.art/products/the-queens-gambit-chess-board

Hi,

I’m after the board as well but not available in the uk at the moment. I think Rechapardos Ferrer have a massive backlog of orders. Also if you watch Queens Gambit you’ll see they’ve aged the board to match the pieces. Something you won’t get from a new board.

I see some possibilities, but a lot of them are so.. wore down. It's a shame.

Hi

silvereliminator04

Those pieces are called Latvian style chessmen I’ve seen them r expensive because they’re usually originals I’m hoping to find a cheap plastic version

Rechapados Ferrer from Spain now offers the exact series set in their new website Ferrer Chess ( https://ferrerchess.com/en/home/ ).

They put an Q&A explaining why they don’t sell directly to end users but can recommend the nearest distributors if you contact them.

I don’t have it and do not intend to buy it, since I prefer original soviet sets.

If someone buys it, please put a review here.

The latvian chess pieces being currently offered are mostly similar to this except the knights.

I donot find this chess set on etsy

A replica of the set used for the show is sold at The Chess Store. Click on the link below. They also sell the Ferrer board used on the show.

Here in Spain, the main distributors of Ferrer already have it available around €200 delivered.

Does anyone know the name of the chess pieces used by Harry Beltik and Beth Harmon during their practice sessions?

IanBrettCooper

I love the chess board they used in "The Queen's Gambit", but the chess pieces for the final game not so much. I liked that it was the Latvian style, but it was a bit too minimalist for my taste. In the end, I went with a combination of the "Queen's Gambit" board (2 1/4" squares) from The Chess Store, but I chose a set of Latvian pieces (4" King) from Chessbazaar to pair with it. I think it turned out nicely.

Happy to see this thread resurrected. Anything happen to the rumored/supposed sequel?

IanBrettCooper

Apparently talk about a sequel was all fake news.

I wish it could happen, but unlike The Queen's Gambit, there would be no book as a basis for a sequel, and (given that writers are treated pretty poorly by the industry these days) I would worry about the quality of the writing - we all saw what happened to GoT and The Witcher when the foundation for the shows got sidelined and the schedules got tight.

Also, Anya Taylor Joy seems to be going into full-on Hollywood movie star mode, so I'm thinking even if there was to be a sequel they wouldn't have been able to get her back to do it.

@IanBrettCooper, great combo of Latvian pieces and board! Yes, the pieces used for filming were circa 1980s Soviet which simplified the Latvian pattern and were unweighted. Your pieces seem to have greater detail and heft. How do they handle on that board? Thanks for posting your photos!

I haven’t seen an example of the simplified version. Do you know how I could search for a vintage one?

The original 1950s pieces were already unweighted though. At least, the ones I came across are. I have a 1952 set which is unweighted.

@WandelKonigin I think the main difference is that the 1980's pieces don't have crenelated rooks and the knights are simpler. I ended up getting a 1980's set but I really like the more detailed 1950's style Latvian
