question about chess informant notation

I apologize if this has been asked before but I couldn't find any posts on it. I'm going through one of the Chess Informants and I've found some symbols that I'm not too sure what they mean. They are located next to the game number at the beginning of each game. Could someone tell me what they stand for? Thanks in advance.
The symbols are:
* or ** or *** - I'm not sure if this stands for game quality or what
!N - I'm assuming this stands for important theoretical novelty but I'm not sure.
