Rapid Chess Improvement: CT-ART?

Sort:

I'm reading "rapid chess improvement: a study plan for adult players" and I really love it.

The recommendation in the book is to buy CT-ART 3.0 from chessassistant.com.

The problem is this was written in 2002 and that website is now gone. 3.0 is also an older version.

Does anyone have a recommendation for where I can buy an updated version? And from where exactly?

Thank you!

My understanding is that ChessKing has the rights to the tactics set and 10.0 appears to be the newest version.

This should be it then? Thank you!

I tried this with CT Art years ago and found that it wasn’t a very suitable tactics set. The reason I thought this was that there was a vast difference in the difficulty of the problem set. You can probably get a good tactics set from chess king though, but I wouldn’t be overly eager to get the original ct art problem set.

If the software is twenty years old, the features have almost certainly been incorporated into other newer training programmes.

I would suggest if looking for a desktop programme specifically aimed at chess training, rather than playing chess, that is free, give 'LucasChess' a whirl - just type the string into a search engine and you will find the website to download the installer, size 155Mb.

I picked up CT-Art 6 a few years ago. The desktop app looks dated, but I like the phone app a lot.

There are a number of people who have blogged about their experience using just Chess Tactics for Beginners (1276 positions), which is part of the CT-Art package (or can be purchased separately). (I have no affiliation with the company, other that I gave them some money once.)

I am pretty sure I have seen CT-Art available as a separate purchasable module via ChessKings.

Additionally ChessHero - freebie - has all 1001 puzzles from Reinheld book - albeit without solutions.

Phone app is not bad, but just like Matt, I find the difficulty grading can be quite a bit off.

Interestingly enough, I've got a copy of Maksim Blokh's tactics book vol.1 (graded and themed) which formed the base for CT-ART, and the printed version is much better graded in terms of difficulty.

You'd probably struggle to find the Blokh books these days, but they've been printed with Russian, English and German commentary in the same book when they came out, so you don't need to hunt for a language-specific version.

You can get a copy of "Maxim Blokh CHESS - Combinational Motifs" from the SCRIBD website.  There are 1206 problems in this book.
