I like the design in general but the plastic threads show up too much on chess pieces made through 3D printing. It would be great if one day a method will be found to make chess pieces with smooth/uniform surface.

I think this is related to the filament selection or type, maybe the printing method. I don't know.
Print w/ ABS filament followed by vapor smoothing https://all3dp.com/2/abs-acetone-smoothing-3d-print-vapor-smoothing/, but the glossiness could be undesirable.
