Consider these handmade pieces:

Really nice wood pieces are expensive. The cheaper ones can tend to crack if the wood is not properly cured. I also like the wood grain to show, especially in the "black" pieces, otherwise the set looks like plastic if it is covered with ebony lacquer.
If money is no object, look at houseofstaunton.com and their dozens of wood sets.
I love bestchessmenever chess sets , love that minimal , modern and edgy look of the chessmen , only problem is - I can't afford it!
Pricewise your best bet is to try and snag a "minty" used set off Ebay. Of course you do have to know a little something about the market since people lie like rugs about their sets. There is a direct from India seller called Chessbazaar who has a nice selection at great prices. I've purchased from him and was pleasantly surprised at the quality-his Ebay ratings are close to 100% satisfaction. If you check out Ebay, use a filter like "staunton" to weed out all the goofy theme sets (although I confess I have a baseball set coming that I got for $17.50 including shipping that I bought for the 2 1/4" square wooden board).
Hey, it Looks like you really like these handmade wooden pieces.. in that case I will also recomend you chessbazaar.. the reason is that they have very nice collection of handcrafted wooden chess sets & peices..it is almost impossible to get perfect wooden pieces these days.. but chessbazaar is near to perfect.. I bet you won't get disappointed as per my experince with them. I purchased weighted staunton chess set from them few months ago.. it's simply awesome.. here is the link..
Go Ahead.. but you may go directly to their website.. because their ebay store is little bit expensive..but product quality is same..
Good luck. . .
If you want tall pawns I recommend you go with an Eastern Euro to Russian design influenced set. These chess men usually have chunky tall pawns, and relatively shorter major pieces.
The Austrian Coffeehouse design at chessbazaar seems very solid. But at 4.2" it may be a bit larger than you'd like. Are you planning on using this in competition?
Hello,
I'm looking to buy a new chess set but it turns out I'm a bit too picky and can't actually find something to suit my needs.
Basically what I want is a 3.75 in set, with a king heavier than 60 grams (70 would be ideal). I don't care too much about the wood used as long as it is decent quality but I really hate colors that are not dark enough for the black pieces. I like pieces to be relatively slender with broad bases and as classic-looking as possible. Pawns must be relatively tall, barely shorter than a rook.Price would ideally be around 100 quid.
Bellow are 2 sets that come quite close:
This is a 4 inch, other than that I'd be quite happy with it http://www.chessmazeinternational.com/catalogue/grand-master-staunton-rosewood-chess-set-2038.php
Next one is a bit lightweight, although the king weight seems to be okish, the complete set only weights 1 kg - it should be around 1.3 kg which is a bit worring.

Please recommend me other similar pieces (not really interested in boards at this point)
Cheers.
