For the sum of $1500-$2000 which laptops are recommended to use with chess software

I dunno, maybe chessmaster from myabandonware (older pc support)

Go for AMD thread-ripper 8 or 16 cores. Graphics card is not very important for chess analysis however you will need better cooling system if you are using 100% of your cores. Ex: 8 core pc usually have 16 thread that where you will set up your engine and hash value based on your memory RAM in pc. These setting goes only if you want to analyze game which could be performed on chess.com membership with cloud engine where you avoiding all the huddles of building your pc. In my opinion you will have to build custom pc, and if you are running for laptop then i suggest you to go with cloud engine comes with chess.con membership.

For paid chess software: komodo3.2 or fritz18 if you want to play against human-like bot. Fritz18 is more interactive and fun to play as well as you can upgrade it too with many of chessbase add-ons like opening database, corresponding database, powerbooks and most popular mega database. Its all depends on your interests. If you are not willing to spend too much then go for aquarium 2020 easy and preset with all tree search and gui plus opening books installed. For free just download Arena and stockfish for best result but remember you have to install opening book to study best trimmed opening from expert which you can find in ctg or polyglot formate.

If I have 2000 budget and want to spend on chess machine then I will for sure go with custom build pc on 16 cores instead of laptop.

Final choice is yours, good luck!

The old fritz was playing like a machine should. Are you sure that the 18th version is more human like?

11-Kaizen

Yes they both are good for learning. Chess engine like Maia made human-like mistakes and that's why I am not suggesting if you really want improve. Fritz and komodo is best option for now to get human-like play experience with set value on UCI strength which should be adjusted based on each players rating. Apart from that they have option of Auto-skilling which basically play 1 skill below your level and increasing your chance of winning which is also not a good option. Go with UCI strength control for improvement.

Good luck!

ok tnx.

My understanding is that a good graphics card is critical for chess engine performance.
11-Kaizen

@Atomic_Checkmate Unfortunately GPU is not effective right now, assuming it will take may be 10 more years to program GPU for unknown tree and positional structure. Even though analyst find way to make calculation with GPU which can be only possible through CPU.

In next 10 to 15 years when it comes to chess analysis CPU will be owner of activity and GPU will act only as reinforcement to strengthen CPU. This will happen in future but we don't have enough established work done on GPU usage for chess analysis.

your best option is to refer website of chess program you are planning to get. If developer haven't implemented GPU communication code apart from box and piece structure recognition then yes you don't required to get high performance GPU. 2 GB will work as fine as 12 GB.

We are moving in era where GPU learning and program structure still under process for chess analysis. NNUE using somewhat few part of GPU power (that may be box+ piece structure) but CPU work based on learning from millions of game played in past and CPU can detect unrecognized pattern for now which have never happen and keep game healthy without any weird move output however GPU fails to do so, due to lack of learning/programming.

Now next part is, Avx2 Files 64-bit relies almost 0% GPU performance/usage and it is best file format you get in consumer market for chess engines.

In nutshell, Speak with developer before buying higher performance GPU, otherwise that dollars are for nothing if you are investing only for chess analysis software. Strong Komodo and Fritz are out of game for best GPU performance requirement. They will work fine with 2GB graphics for now.

If you want to check your GPU usage then download Arena for free or Any GUI, download CHESS ENGINE and run analysis or play game with bot then START TASK MANAGER in your pc then go to performance tab to check how many percentage of GPU is used during game or analysis. I have 2GB on GPU and it been use max 2%.

Open picture in new tab for closer look!
14% analysis done, 100%CPU in use/GPU almost stays on 0%

Hope it will help!

Good luck!

Analyzing with Dragon 3.1, Smart way to put load on engine.
See that load allocation, beauty of putting load on engine.
All engine use CPU as brain, GPU can only be reinforcement in case developer work on programming which haven't yet happen to make 100% or even 20% use of GPU.
So don't spend dollars on GPU where you will required less than 2GB of graphic support.
Good Luck!

Non of them acquire human-like play as asked. You are right but lets focus on Human-like play where Komodo and Fritz18 stand out clearly fun to enjoy game with AI and improve game performance. Engines like stockfish and lc0 is demotivation for player who wants to see improvement with fun. and can you please share your % GPU performance from computer task manager during analysis or game with lc0. Thanks!

Nope as you can see in image uploaded I have only 2GB on GPU. Not needed for next 10 years unless I see something excited. Cheers! I will check Lc0 with friends. Thanks!

I am not sure where you are getting your information from. But the future is now!

If you want to have access to the strongest neural networks for chess. A RTX GPU is a must have item. As the biggest and strongest neural networks are used by Lc0.  And like Stockfish, Leela Chess Zero is 100% free.

......................................

Hi there, thanks for sharing. Its surprising to see threadripper 16 cores utilizing only 2 cores on Lc0. Another surprise is not utilizing buddy engine on CH17. Great!thumbup

What are your suggestion on Human-like chess engine aside from Maia bot? Strongest AIs are for developer to study machine learning so for me its out of scope.

Thanks in advance for engine suggestion!

I have threadripper 1950x (16 core) and I need upgrade to ryzen 7950x?

EdwardTownsend01

Within your budget range of $1500-$2000, you can find laptops with high-performance components that are ideal for running chess software seamlessly. Look for models equipped with Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 processors, as they offer excellent processing power. Additionally, aim for at least 16GB of RAM to ensure smooth multitasking and responsiveness while using chess programs. A high-resolution display will also enhance your gaming experience, allowing you to see the board clearly and enjoy crisp graphics. I was just wondering how you did on that. It's a follow-up on a great topic.
If you're still exploring options, I have a suggestion. Also, I think I found a really good laptop for Photoshop. Let me know if you're interested, and I can share more details.

No, unless you have excessive money. Many of us are using old PCs. I use midrange phone and satisfied with Stockfish analysis. It's better to buy Chessbase (if you don't have yet).

Best laptop for chess analysis. Ryzen 9 7945HX have 16 Cores / 32 Threads. Check your local dealer or website.
