Reproduction and Real Jaques of London Chess Set

Yep that is super low pricing for an ebony set, the cost of the raw materials alone, and then the production etc etc...doesnt make buisiness sense, but then again is the price the only factor? is it a good reproduction ?

Official Staunton could never quite match such a pricing structure because our business model is different to most as we are not a clearinghouse -there's lots of those in Amritsar. As I said ages ago, if you want and can afford Bentley etc....:)

Hm, I doubt that motor cars and chess sets can be compared in any material way but I do understand what you are getting at.

Yes quality is an issue with chess sets, we would all like a wonderfull set for not very much money.

As for clearing houses I am not sure what you mean there. Surely it is well known that almost all chess set sellers are selling sets made in India?

I do agree however that when in business one has to decide upon a model and stick to it as long as it is working. It was my intention when I got involved in the design and production of modern sets that players and collectors and lovers of chess set designs generally should be offered good quality sets at resonable prices. At the time I intervened in the market, it was my personal opinion that sets sold by American drop shop houses were overpriced (allowing for the vastly lower production costs in India where all of the sets were being made) and that the chess playing and buying public were being fleeced by some retailers who were trying (at that time) to pretend they made their own sets in some cases in order to capture the 'home made' market.

However the market place has changed, I hope in part to my efforts and many other factors I'm sure. If there is a place for high priced well made 'Bentley' chess sets then all well and good time will tell.

Also I have no doubt that buyers of both high end sets and good quality lower priced sets will post their opinions here. I do not know if sets can be compared to each other in any real sense as beauty is in the eye of the beholder in many cases. Think for example how popular the old Soviet sets are becoming. My tip, buy them while you can

Most of the wooden chess sets made in India crack after a short while! That must have something to do with the way they process wood or not using standard dried wood.

I have at least eight wooden sets made in India, purchased over the last five years or so. None of them have cracked yet.

Unfortunately, some of mine have cracked.

Hi Guys

we have been asked many times to come out with a library size chess set in Antique/Ebony, so here it is! itll be available in approx 6 weeks. The king is 3.50 inch with a 1.75 inch base diameter and 80gms in weight.

The set will have the usual king side stamping with official staunton on the boxwood king. The price will be £249.00

your comments greatly appreciated as always :)

Great looking set Carl, I noticed the top of the king's cross is missing the tiny ball tip, typical of most Staunton sets including the vintage Jaques.  Its great this set will have the boxwood pieces antiqued.

Thanks Mike!

weve taken it direct from this set below which is a Jaques harwitz 1855 - if you feel it would be best with the ball tip then lets have a show of hands so we can apply or not

I feel like the stem of the bishop and its head could be a tad narrower, and the piece itself a bit shorter. The queen looks like she is barely taller than the bishop, in fact. It might just be the angle of the picture though. Overall it looks great, however. I'm a great fan of this type of design, and I think that a lot of people would love to have the opportunity to buy a quality 3,5 inch king set. Perhaps offering natural in addition to antiqued could be an option?

You're welcome Carl, could it be that the ball tip broke off the 1855 Jaques Harwitz King  as I have never seen any other Jaques King's cross without the tiny ball tip?

Super looking set. I like the antique and also like the natural , but I like ebonized for the dark pieces, not only to cut down on cost but also piece cracking.  Of course the craftsmanship should still be super high even though the black pieces would be dyed.  Again great looking set.

I undertood Library Size to be around the 4.5 inches.

since there was a request for show of hands, I'm all in favour of the tiny ball on top of the King's cross...

I believe we have perfected the 1851 knight with very slight modification to eyes, snout and ears..closer to original me thinks, what say you fine gentlemen of the crown, with balls and gusto!

TundraMike

Perfecto.
