Review of Noj Dubrovnik 1950

For the 9th Chess Olympiad, held in Dubrovnik a city in former Yugoslavia in 1950 a new designed chess set was introduced. It becomes what is now known as Dubrovnik 1950 chess set.

This review is about a Dubrovnik 1950 reproduction made by a small but very successful family business, Noj Ltd Slovenia. Their skill and high quality pieces are highly regarded in the chess community all over the world. It shows in the waiting list to get a set from them, I had to wait 8 months to get mine and in time of this writing one has to wait until the end of 2023 that's 28 months!

This is the Dubrovnik 1950 in walnut and maple, unweighted and matte finish. I specifically requested for a matte finish as by default their finish is always high gloss polished.

The pieces came in a very nice hard box. Inside all the pieces were separated by dividers and filled up with pieces of foam. A certificate was included.

A nice gift was included as well, a pen made from the same wood as the pieces and my name engraved on it.

Measured specs:

King 3.53" (89.8mm) / 1.49" (37.8mm) - 20.26g/22.03g
Queen 3.09" (78.5mm) / 1.51" (38.3mm) - 17.58g/17.48g
Bishop 2.85" (72.5mm) / 1.35" (34.3mm) - 12.75g/13.48g
Knight 2.5" (63.6mm) / 1.35" (34.3mm) - 15.49g/15.11g
Rook 2.08" (52.8mm) / 1.35" (34.3mm) - 14.41g/14.96g
Pawn 1.88" (47.7mm) / 1.17" (29.8mm) - 8.15g/8.67g

Note: weight is maple first then walnut.

Weight set: 384.3g (without extra queens)

Impression:

The pieces are just simply elegant and impeccable in carving and finish. There are more than 3 layers of lacquer coating on them and yet maintain my requested matte look, It might not be that fancy looking as their default high gloss polished finish but for me this is perfect for playing, less distraction so to speak.

Like the original, this set is unweighted and therefor light. That's why the set was designed with broad bases to make it stable and it is indeed stable. It suits my style of playing, I like to grab the pieces lightly between my fingers and move it quickly. If one doesn't like unweighted pieces there is always the option to have them weighted at no cost.

When I saw this set for the first time around 8 months ago, I fell in love with the look. Now I have it in my hands, it meets my expectations in every way, how it looks, the exquisite feels of the finish and how it handles during plays. That wait and price is totally worth it.

NOJ delivery time has been updated:

Due to high interest in our chessmen the manufacture is completely occupied until the middle of 2024.

Oh wow, my review has only been online for a short while and it's already causing an extra delay of 6 months 'til middle of 2024 tongue.png

This says it all.  Well done and very nice pictures that demonstrate the craftsmanship of the maker. Thank you  for sharing with us.

I ordered beginning of January this year and that is already couple of months extra waiting lol

Noj Dubrovnik is a good copy but it is not completely similar to the original. Both Staunton Castle and Chessbazaar have reproduced this chess set and they look a good copy of the original at less than half Noj price. I am not sure about unweighted as it does not give the same pleasure as the weighted but Fischer preferred unweighted only because he wanted to carry his set with him everywhere easily even in his pockets otherwise for playing over the board against another opponent he would prefer weighted and the popular Reyjanik set Fischer used in the match in 1972 was weighted.

I have triple weighted Dubrovnik and I can play with both but if I have to choose then I go with unweighted. It's just a matter of preferences. When it comes to cost I always believe buy what you really want and not the second best because it's cheaper. In the long run you will find out going the cheapest way will cost you even more eventually.

Beautiful set!

I am somewhat of a newbie - I hadn't played chess in decades until this year and my one decent set had been a plastic Drueke set from the 60s or 70s. When I decided to buy some wood sets, the Dubrovnik did not initially appeal to me. But after looking at several threads of the set, and now your set, I have flipped and decided this is a must-have set for me.

Given the wait for, and the cost of, the Noj set, I am seriously leaning toward one of the Staunton Castle sets.

Again, I love your set. Simply alluring and elegant.

@martinbchess  Awesome. Did you post images of your red stained Minceta somewhere? That is the style and stain I'm leaning towards when my name finally comes up. I'm wondering if the red stain is dark and opaque like the brown? Or more translucent like the photos NOJ has on their site. I've seen it both ways and wonder if it's the lighting.

Cheers! You can't go wrong with SC version, that's also a masterwork. Just get both, SC now and sign up for the waiting list and forget about it happy.png

Well-done review.

Yeah me too like how the matte finish turned out. It was tough decision though, either the fancy look or going for practicality (read less shiny).

TheOneCalledMichael

That's true! In fact, you'll have enough time to find 2 B210's! What's your bank account number? I'll wire some money in advanced!

No I haven't used the pen, in fact I don't think I'll ever use it, I have used it long enough when I was at school. I still can remember one time I forgot I had it in my trousers pocket and it leaked. Gone trousers lol. I keep it on top of the Noj storage box happy.png

Nice review! there has been a lot of talk about this set in the forum but it is never too much, it is always good to speak about it. the king is pretty similar to the SC and to mine. The carving is excellent and you don't have to worry to find any flaw.

TheOneCalledMichael

Master Jac! I think your set is also truly special. Like I've said before I'd be proud to put your set next to Noj's on my display shelf, that is if I have a nice big room for that and a display shelf ☺

A beautiful set to be sure.

This finish looks superb.

It’s very interesting - similar to Richard - I was not immediately drawn to Noj sets - but as time time passes, I get it. There’s something about the knights - and the whole set - that shows a delicate hand but is somehow rudimentary (for example, how the knight’s ears are represented) - not sure what I mean - other than to say the pieces are not “showy” - they don’t shout ‘look at me’ - rather they reflect a quiet confidence.

I note @jacmater chimed in above. His pieces remind me of similar … a craftsman who cares, humbly creating fine, fine work.

Lovely stuff.

Most people will buy a $20-35 bottle of wine as a gift for a party host. A $20-35 bottle of wine is perfectly fine. It tastes good and goes well alone or with a meal. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a $20-35 bottle of wine.

But then you look around the wine store, and see all these other wines that cost 1.5x, 2x, and MORE on the shelves. What's up with that? So many choices at different prices. If you want to splurge, a $35-50+ bottle of wine is more nuanced in flavor and refined.

A NOJ chess set is refined. A splurge for enjoyment. NOJ is not for everyone. I can totally see the flipside and understand that some people will see it as a waste of money. A $25 plastic set or $150 wood repro is perfectly fine. I'm not here to convince anyone otherwise.

Freedom to choose and variety is wonderful.

I recognize how mister MCH818 put it. Just like Chavet a Dubrovnik set is made to play. There is no delicate pieces sticking out that could easily break. It's a simple elegant design, yet it gives that powerful vibes. Next to the beautiful knight, it's the round finials that captures my attention. I know originally it was designed as neutral pieces without any reference to religious symbols but the round finials it's like emphasizes the essence of the whole set, a simple robust set made to play. The opposite color on the bishop is just a nice touch added to the whole. Add to that, the broad bases finishes it off perfectly.

I think the size of Noj version is perfect, just like the original. Compared to the bigger version of SC, it's just like beauty and the beast. Both are beautiful without doubt.

Everyone says the Noj set is pricey but no one seems to list the price! Can someone tell me the approximate price of a set today (knowing it may well be more in 2024)? Thanks.
