I wouldn't even consider making any unless I could find a type of leather which lays flat. The first thing I'd do is ask a major leather supplier for a suggestion. My guess is that the softer the leather is, the more likely it is to always lay flat. That might have the disadvantage of not being able to stay firmly in a rolled up state, which is also a disadvantage of the silicone boards from what I've heard.

I would be interested in a leather board of your making. My board preference would be a darker green with tan for the board colors though. I think it'd make a great project and could be a good seller! If you could make a standard 2.25" square board I'd definitely inquire about purchasing one, maybe two depending on the price. I need a new board soon for travel/tournament play. Let me know!

I got this roll up leather chess board from ACE 7-8 years ago, it is printed in green on soft cowhide. It was only about $25-$30 back then.

Then ACE quit selling them they were only available for a short while. But I noticed a few months ago they started selling some similar ones printed in black on the suede side instead of the smooth side. I just checked their site for you and it is out of stock but you could call or email them about a possible date that they may be back in stock if you're interested.

They scammed you on it and gave you two light squared bishops...lol

IDK why that pic is like that, all stretched out and out of proportion to the natural aspect ratio.  I took that pic about 2  years ago, it was a game where my then 10 year old daughter had just defated my then 6 year old son. (now ages 12 and 8) She was trying to use the Legal's mate that I had recently shown her but my son had protested because he didn't notice that board had been set up wrong from the begining.  So I took the pic then about a year later this thread started and and that was the only pic I had on my phone of the leather chess board at the time.

I have had a roll up leather board that many of my chess buddies envy. It was made by a company called "Chess Era" who I can no longer find. I bought it for cheap when I was a young man, probably in the 1970s or 1980s. I have no idea, but it's great and I have looked and looked for more f them and cannot find them. It is thin, supple leather, lays perfectly flat. I keep it rolled up in a PVC tube and carry it weekly to a club or two and it still is in near new condition after 30+ years of use. I have tried to find similar quality and cannot. There is a market here, I think.

Aren't you afraid some PETA activists will show up and throw blood on your set?

No. PETA = People Eating Tasty Animals.

I can see these leather rollup boards being sold by chessbazaar. Anyone has had any experience buying from them?

I actually make leather chess sets that roll up and lie completely flat too.  It's not a hard thing to do if you use the right leather and is conditioned properly.  If you want to check them out they are here:   Made to order.

There are some beautiful hand crafted leather chess boards at etsy.com.  Here is one of my favorites:

That board is gorgeous, but I don't think it meets tournament standards. Not enough contrast between light and dark.

lofina_eidel_ismail

agreed, good looking board (for display)... ...... the color contrast is another story altogether... ....

hey guys,  I make travel chess sets on Etsy. I think Nathan above linked to one of mine already (he has also purchased one earlier this year, so pretty happy he is happy enough to post a recomendation happy.png )     www.sanchezleather.etsy.com   They lie flat, are completely hand made and have 3 colour combos on display, but can totally make something custom coloured with more contrast.

Hi,

Beautiful boards!  How much for just the board (no pieces)?  Are the squares 2.25"?  Also are the squares individually sewn together?

Thanks.

Mrmariosan

Thank you cghori happy.png

The boards are 20" squared and the squares are 2" squared. But they are all made to order and as I have done with previous clients, I can make the board 22" squared and the squares 2.25"^2 .  The squares are carved onto the leather, it is a vegetable tanned full grain cow leather, which allows me to do this.   (like what we make saddles from, but thinner)      I can and have sold them without pieces also.  Get in touch with me via Etsy and  I can give you an official quote there.  I don't feel right clogging up these forums with prices etc.   happy.png

Well, I have gone ahead and ordered one of these boards.

I corresponded with Mario quite a bit and ended up with my dark squares being green and the light squares being a light tan.  The border and edge will be green and a dark caramel respectively.  And the carrying case will be dark caramel.

Of course when I get the board in a couple of months or so (yes he has a waiting list) I'll post some pictures.

I am getting the board in 2.25" square size so i can use it for tournament play.

I expect to use my Ebonized, Rosewood, Sheesham and Walnut sets on this board.  I can't wait.

TadrodderTots

awesome.  good things are worth waiting for.

I was thinking I had a leather board from decades ago but after confirming with a friend who still has his, it was vinyl.

And I really like the chessboard and playing pieces made of leather and preferably from the top grain leather.https://leather-toolkits.com/types-of-leather/top-grain-leather/ This type of leather is the most durable and does not require scrupulous care. Such a board can serve you for a long time.
