"... The title might suggest [that The Soviet Chess Primer] is for beginners, but that is not the case. It does start off with some basic positions, but quickly moves on to much more advanced material including chapters on positional play and techniques of calculation." - IM John Donaldson

"The Soviet Chess Primer" - this is what pretty much everyone advised me to get when I asked for a primer from the RUSSIAN school

Ultimately, it is the reader who determines how much a book is going to teach. Reviews and online samples can help one to make a satisfying choice.

The only caveat for "The Soviet Chess Primer" is that the book is more "advanced" than the title would suggest.  In fact the term "primer" is probably a misnomer.  The material would be very challenging, and probably not very helpful, in terms of instruction in chess fundamentals, for the beginning-novice player.  The book is more appropriate for the experienced, intermediate player and beyond.
