SCID vs PC help

Hi all,

I've never really got the hang of this program, so could use some help.

I have a PGN file with the 400 competitive games I have played in it. Some of the later games have only the moves and the basic headers (names, date, event). I want to use SCID to auto-analyse, identify the opening ECO and to add some game information fields to these games, and then to update the PGN accordingly (which is then sync'd to my phone for use with Stockfish).

The problems I encounter are:

  1. Set Game Information is greyed out, so I can't add Elos etc.
  2. If I save, I just get a file with the one game in it, not all 400

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance

Tools --> Maintenance --> Maintenance window --> ECO classify games.

Then Export the whole database.

Thanks for helping on this; it works, but only adds the code - how can it add the common name as well? (I don't want to use the SCID ECO extension option).

Also, I still don't get how to:

  1. save any analysis/variations/comments
  2. add other Game Information fields

Thanks in advance.

1. Tools --> Export all filter games --> Export to PGN

2. Games --> Set game information

1. So I can't amend multiple games before exporting? If I add any analysis to a game and then move on to the next one, it loses all the analysis I did on the first game. 2. As I said in the OP, this option is greyed out.

I don't understand your question. Sorry. Yes, you can amend games to database and then export.

Hi. Your problem is because you're trying to work with PGN files in Scid vs. PC. (You should probably read the Help file regarding Scid database file formats. Also, go to the Help Index and read the entry titled "PGN and Scid".) Scid vs. PC handles PGN files as nearly completely read-only. I believe that the program will save edits to a game *if* it's the only game in the PGN database. However, if there are multiple games in a PGN database, the program will only save edits made to the last game edited.

To edit multiple games in a database, you first need to convert the PGN database to a Scid database. You can do that by either dragging and dropping the PGN file into the clipbase, or by using the command-line utility to directly convert the database from PGN to Scid format. (This command-line utility should be in the same folder as your main Scid executable. If you're running Windows, the file's name should be pgnscid.exe, and if you're running Linux, it should be pgnscid.)

After making all of your edits to the Scid database, you can either leave the database as a Scid database or export the database back into a PGN database.
