1st Chess Olympiad 1927 London
Staunton Chess Set (Jaques of London) 1920-1930s.
Chess pieces played at the 1927 Chess Olympiad
The 1st Chess Olympiad took place between 18 and 30 July, 1927 at the Westminster Central Hall, London, United Kingdom.
The 1st Women's World Chess Championship also took place during the time of the olympiad.
Source: Wiener Bilder, 31 July 1927, page 6. Our correspondent identifies the photograph as taken during the first round of the 1927 Olympiad in London (Austria v Finland, with S.R. Wolf (White) and J. Terho in the foreground).
Katarina Beskow (left) plays Agnes Stevenson. This is a posed photo as neither was due to play each other on the day that it must have been taken, 18 July 1927, which was the first day of the inaugural Women's World Chess Championship tournament at Central Hall, Westminster, London. Photo from the Daily Mirror, 19 July 1927.
The photo clearly shows the chess pieces that were played at the 1927 Chess Olympiad, and at the Women's World Championship 1927.
