My last acquisition. A chess from Moscow 1956. It has been repainted, I guess, because they are in perfect condition. Sorry for the quality of the photos. if you want any more detailed, let me know. thanks to chuck for sharing his Soviet pieces, I knew them because of him.

I would love to have a set of the old Soviet chess pieces.  Are they weighted?  Beautiful, just beautiful.

Most Soviet Grandmaster tournament sets were weighted yes. Here are a few of my different rarer all wooden knight 40's-60's versions ...

Yes, they are weighted, and all parts made of wood. happy.png

Nice pieces rombo. It's not easy to find a grandmaster in all wood. Congrats!

Thanks happy.png. You're quite right. The early Soviet GM sets are my favorites because of the cool wooden knight variations. Here are the different set knights together for comparison ...

The carving ability of these guys is far from been "excelent" but there is something in the design that make it absolutely lovely for me.
Please don't buy more of them wink.png, I want one happy.png

thanks, but we are talking here about original pieces, not repro

Fer8799

thanks but there aren't any chessmen with the design we are talking about

mikejungle

erm, how are you guys telling whether the knights are all wood or not?

Never entered my mind that the vintage sets I've been looking at might not have all-wood knights

crusaderwabbet

The knights have been replaced at some time . Most likely  the wood ones broke.

That E-Bay set is nice but how many folks here would consider spending that kind of money and still be in a marriage?-

Thank you for sharing your pieces.  I'm preparing a short photo book to go along with my Tal set brought back to life by Chuck and Noj.  Do you know who designed or manufactured your set and when?

From Arlindo's video on soviet chess pieces there are 4 GM variations.  The version I find most interesting is yours, a western design (King's cross finial and bishop's mitre).  This is the only variation with religious symbols... interesting details for communist Russia considering how politicized chess was at the time.

The variation that inspired the Tal set produced by Noj was used in the 1962 Soviet Championship and I believe one other (I'm still trying to confirm).  This also has a king's cross and bishop mitre but shares additional design elements from each of the GM variations.  Just trying to determine a timeline for when particular pieces have appeared.
