Spanish Chess Pieces

Sort:
kenardi

I have seen this set before... where to buy?

This set is not available in the USA, can anyone recommend a chess shop that might sell and ship this set to the USA?

I have bought several of them through

http://www.ajedrez-webstore.es/

No problems with them, fast and reliable service, although they have an awful customer service (they don't usually answer emails)

They are not weighted and no extra queens. The flagship set of spain.

I recommend the staunton 5 for 50mm. For 55mm square board I also use the staunton 5, although you might prefer 6. The pieces of 5 are very nice in my opinion.

My favourite, although you can find it very distracting:

With some weight...

If you don't want them glossy...

Yes, you can find them everywhere here. I have a 5 that was bought at El Corte Inglés. :D They are very nice, but I find them a bit too light. Have you tried the weighted set, szocio?

I second the recommendation for ajedrez-webstore.es - they are dependable and offer good quality sets. I bought two sets from them, including the non-glossy Staunton 6 version of the set shown above

Thanks for the links!  Nice online shop!

Interesting, they are named Staunton and not Spanish chessmen, and all the sets are stained boxwood.

Only the "Professional" sets are weighted?

That set looks like a match for the set in video.

Non-glossy Staunton 6:

This is the the set you have pictured?

The #5 chessmen seem to be a little more popular based on the price.  Guessing the standard sqaure size is 50mm in Spain.

Yes, I think you are right. The sets of the video are St 6.

Here in tournaments we use 55mm, but in clubs 50mm boards are widely used. Although normally you will find the plastic version in clubs, rarely wood, because it is more expensive and clubs put the pieces to play.

They have also olive pieces.

Only the "professional" are weighted.

Anyone know how heavy the weighted "professional" set typically is?

Its a very interesting set. If sold in the USA I would pick one up. I think shipping from Spain is going to be costly.

I just ordered one like Frank's. Shipping is 35 Euro. Pretty standard from Europe. The only thing that bothered me is that the price included the EU's Value Added Tax, which I've never paid before on an international transaction like this. But a small price to pay for such an interesting set.

Hello, I own a "professional", unfortunatelly I'm on vacation and I don't have the pieces with me, so I can't give you the exact weight for each piece.

It is very slightly weighted, not much difference with the unweighted set. Just enough to make it more stable. If you wouldn't know they are weighted, having them in hand you could think they are not.

In case of buying glossy pieces I rather take the professional.

That gave me a good idea of the weight, thanks!

"It's an upside down boot" - an actual comment regarding the knight. There is a grain of truth in it....
