I don't know about how it interacts with chess.com and ICC but I know a guy who bought the Square Off and I've played with it.  It's pretty cool.  I was surprised how well it worked.

Thanx a lot

I bought a Millennium Chess Genius Exclusive last month, and I love it for playing OTB, but there's no way of playing on line with it. As for playing strength, I'm pretty low rated, so I can't really comment.

Having owned a DGT e-board for almost a year, I don't think the DGT e-board will work well for you because you are looking for online/computer play.  But I've never used my DGT e-board for that type of play (it does come with free membership to an online chess playing site and free Fritz for computer play so everything is ready out of the box for what you want to do).

It is a very good board for OTB play because it records the games.  Although I've been using my own e-board in OTB these days mainly because it uses regular tournament chessboard and pieces.

Oh, you don't need a DGT Pi computer to play against a computer if you use the included Frtiz (free) that runs on a PC  (don't remember if a Mac version was included).  The Pi computer is smaller though.

Also, you probably already know, but you don't need the DGT clock to use the DGT chessboard.  It comes with everything you need to play online and against the computer when you buy the board.

As for the square off chessboard, (based on what I read, I don't own one) you must tell it what piece a pawn promoted to.  How do you tell it?  You must use an external device.  This is just crazy inconvenient to me (I want to deal with just the chessboard/pieces when playing).

It is an unfortunate problem when piece types are not recognized.  I faced similar issue with my own e-board, but my requirements are different enough (recording OTB games) that I was able to more or less solve the problem.

I purchased the Square Off and will receive it in the next days. It is a cool computer if you want to play online and I am even motivated to play against the computer, something that I didn’t do for years.

I should get my square off Monday and i just got the dgt with dgt pi... i wish I could talk to someone with dgt pi experience. I want to be able to play with my buddy in person and let the pieces trigger the clock instead of the button. My buddy likes a timer but not pressing buttons. Also i wonder if the pi can speak the computer moves when playing against the computer

I actually figured out that observation mode will do what i am trying to do... just got to figure out voice now

Observation mode also gives hints to each player if you press the (i dont remember) button... so would be good for a teacher to walk through a game with students. When you move pieces the time goes to other side! This is great for informal games at home.

Square off is just a toy and quite useless, unless you're maybe some kind of collector. But even then, for the collector the DGT board is a better addition to the collection. Square Off has two problems, 1) you can't hook it up to a computer, and 2) It automatically moves the pieces. It's actually very beneficial to move the pieces yourself, because it activates the brain much more. It's the same reason why watching videos is an inferior way of learning as opposed to reading a book and using a board. It's just a too passive method of learning.

I agree! I own a square off and it is definitely a niche type chess board. If you have money to spend then go ahead! Also i get tired of people crying about not having LEDS on the new DGT plastic board... learning chess notation will be forced by the new DGT smart board... and call me old school but I believe learning chess notation is essential. However, same as the square off board,  if there is money to spend on a DGT with LEDS, go ahead!
