Staunton or not Staunton?

A "Staunton" set is supposed to be universally recognizable and so playable by all.

Rate the playability of these sets.

A. Barely Staunton: The Berliner

B. Extreme Staunton: Roaring Knight Ebony

Edit: This is B again.

C. Arrrrrggggghhhhh Staunton: http://www.thechesspiece.com/proddetail.asp?prod=MW1 Edit: Option C is not the picture above. Please click on the link to see the horror that is option C.

The more important the game the more standard I want to go.

The above sets are playable enough though.

TadDude

Option B is 100% playable especially since it appears any knight is acceptable.

D. Bovine knight Staunton

But what is the second choice. Option A (odd shape), option C (odd colours) or would you go for option D (odd thing between bishop and rook)?

C is fine except for mutant so I guess it's B, though I'm not so happy with the extra collar and base riffs and the psycho horse.

Chess is about pattern recognition.  Give me the big clunky plastic set used in tournaments anyday.

That is the point, but your choices to put in some order are A) Odd shape, B) Slightly odd Knight, C) Odd colours picture here  http://www.thechesspiece.com/proddetail.asp?prod=MW1 and D) Odd something between bishop and rook.

OK then:  Set A I would burn on sight.  Set B is playable, sure, but I dont like it.  Isnt C just the knights from B?  Despite myself I actually like the Bovine Knight in D.

There are two pictures of option B. You still haven't see the horror that is option C. http://www.thechesspiece.com/proddetail.asp?prod=MW1

i aesthetically  like set A, it's also not completely umplayable according to me, but i agree with the others, the more standard is the best.

Those sets are for your own pleasure. Maybe some are not intended for playing. If you want something to be recognized easily by anyone, get a standard tournament set.

LMAO that is funny.  It's actually kind of cute, but its not a chess set.
