Straight Up Chess (Vertical Display)

I was discussing chess at work yesterday when a co-worker mentioned a gift he had gotten for Christmas.  It is a chess board hung on the wall in a picture frame with shelves for your chess pieces.  It's made by a guy here in Denver.  Here is his web site http://www.straightupchess.com/

I think it is incredibly ingenious and a great idea.  First, I can keep my favorite current on line chess.com game in sight.  Two, I can display my favorite chess set instead of keeping it in a box in the closet.  My birthday is Sunday and it may be too late but this is certainly on my list.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

Have seen quite a good number of images of such vertical, wall-mounted chess boards. They look interesting for display. But I wonder how would it feel playing long games while standing.

I bought one on sale from the House of Staunton. I dunno. You can set up scenarios to ponder. Beyond that, they make a conversation piece. I will say that the guy who makes them (Missouri?) is a good craftsman. My ‘board’ with RetroMaximum’s Valdai Nobles set.

That's a very attractive display, especially with the Valdai pieces. I have the same pieces and the king height is only 3.25" and they look like they barely fit. Presumably the display case comes in other sizes that accommodate at least 3.75" pieces. Did you choose the size specifically for these pieces?

Later: I found the product page at HoS and I see now that they come in a range of square sizes. I also see why you would buy it on sale.

mjeman,

Definitely a ‘30% discount’ sale item - and find that balance between square height and cost (also wall size).
