Suggestions for Vinyl Boards

Sort:
Aries360

I am looking for a good vinyl board, non glossy dark green and beige/buff/creme with cloth backing. The ones I have seen are either glossy or with pure white squares. Should be good quality, I bought ones years ago and the dark squares had smudges and uneven colors. They also have pretty bad "curl memory", I had a very old vinyl I bought from uscf about 17 years ago that did not have this problem, unfortunately it was stolen.

Any suggestions?

I thought I made it pretty clear I wanted a vinyl board Smile

Try Chess House made in USA vinyl boards. They got a good review here a while back.

Thanks! Other than the gold board they have which I'm interested in, their regular quality boards looks nice, although I can't tell if the light squares are white or "buff". I may buy one of each.

You should get a silicone board if you can find one.  I have one I got from thechessstore.com but I don't think they sell them anymore.  I LOVE my silicone board.  zero memory.  you can roll it, fold it, crumple it into a ball, whatever, and it springs back to its original flat shape.  the only drawbacks are that they carry static electricity, so hairs and fibers stick to them, and also that they are slightly pricier than vinyl boards, (mine was like $20).  That said, I'm never going back to vinyl.  If I ever get another rolling board it will be leather, and that's only for the aesthetic value of leather.

to clarify, silicone boards are NOT the same as mousepad boards.  I've handled those before and don't really like them.  I only mention this because I've seen so many mousepad boards and so few silicone boards that I don't want you to confuse the two.

Agree Chess Houses's Gold board is super. Best roll up hands down, no memory here and pieces slide and it easily cleans off.

Silicon boards are still readily available at a few places including Amazon.

Awesome, I emailed about availability I'll get one to try out. On the downside don't know if this board would have problems being used in tournaments.

I saw this pic of GM Jesse Kraai & was astounded to learn that I'd never seen/heard of what they're calling 'reverse' boards, basically the border is the dark color with light letters. Czech it out:

Someone else in another thread, same topic, showed me where to find them. They do look maybe a bit glossy, but overall what a calming, smooth look. Maybe a bit more professional. I really like these & am planning on ordering a few for x-mas.

thats a good looking board, i'd like to see a review. I'm specially concerned about "curl" memory. I haven't seen a board like that. I think the fact that the guy coordinated his shirt with the board was a nice touch :) btw he's using my favorite set.

Has anyone tried these new textured vinyl boards from American Chess Equipment: http://www.amchesseq.com/1030t.html. They look kind of cool, but I'm not really sure what the benefit of the texture is.

czechhappens

Those textures look really bad to me. I feel like each light square would catch the light diagonally; it looks like the reflective strips you see on a firefighter's Heavy Coat. Who thought of this, for pete's sake WHY. Doesn't compare at all to the smooth, dark nature of these boards:

Aries360

I agree. I tried getting one those boards on ACE but the shipping was way too high. Bummer.

I plan on getting around that silly issue by just buying 1 red, 1 black, & 3 green. So 5 boards at roughly $4.50 = 22.50, shipping is about $9 more. So about $32. For 5 boards. More like looking at it as 5 boards for $6.67 apiece; I'm not one to quibble over an extra dollar something per board, especially when they look so super nice. Don't forget the unique or intimidation factor when you're the only one at a tournament with this nice thing sticking out of your backpack. Lol.

LOL in that case I hope they come out with a purple version.

If you want to add to the intimidation, get a board without notation.

Silicon boards are sticky, making it pretty much impossible to move pieces by sliding them.

9kick9

Thats correct Jim. The silicon boards do lay perfectly flat however. No wavy/curly vinyl board to contend with. Its a compromise. I never slide pieces anyway so, its great for me.

Aries360

That's the deal killer for me. Throught the years I've developed a subtle and yet graceful and elegant sliding style when moving the pieces, as if my hand glides through the air and the pieces surf the board to the predestined square. To the uninitiated in chess this denotes a sublime mastery of the game. That I can't change... I won't... I refuse.
