Tactic Workbook list for beginners to intermediate

Sort:
Fedec

Good evening my chess friends (foes? Partners?)!!

Let's get to the point. I know it's another list about books... But I'd like to throw in my little rock, my way, so it might help others who are looking for the same type of information (and i'll not fool anyone, it will help me to. I'm not THAT altruist). Plus i like lists happy.png

So here's the deal. In my research and curiosity, i was looking for different books on different themes as the openings (i'll post a similar thread around New Year's Eve), fundamental books for (not complete) beginners and so on. As you've read, this thread will be about Tactics.
BUT I'd like to focus on the PUZZLE books. Why you ask? Well, one of the many great advised a received on this forum was one written on this forum and stated this:"You might consider just reading the first 15 [puzzles] of each chapter, then quickly do them again, the same day.  That'll help ingrain them in your brain.  Try to do 30 to 40 a day.  Less than that and you're not getting full benefit...More and you go into overload and don't learn as well.  Doing say, the first 12 of 3 different chapters is a good idea.  That way you're learning 3 different type of tactics.  Then remember, do them over the same day!  It should take much less time the 2nd time."

You guessed it: repetition. tactics seem (to me as a motivated beginner) that tactic are about repetition and recognizing patterns. The quicker the better.
I'll post a few books that I've collected on my wish list that seem to be advised at least once on this site. Some of them nearly in every thread. Please, IF you feel insulted that I forgot a book, tell me and i'll edit it in. But the best would be if you'd chose in this list your favorites. Can be all of them, can be one exception etc... and PLEASE, i know it's boring but if you've read and recommend book(s) in particular, could you add a reason why? Doesn't have to be long happy.png

THE LIST:

1/ Chess Tactics for Champions by S. Polgar.  My first and only book specific about tactics. But i already love it. It has exactly what i was personally looking for. Introductions and few illustration about Tactics and quite a bit of interesting puzzle. There are between 25 and 50 per chapter (22 chapters).

2/ Chess: 5334 problems, combinations and games by L. Polgar. Father of the authour of the latter book, this book has a big reputation. This is a MASSIVE one. You might never need another one. It doesn't it it organised by themes. It looks like it just kind of throw you in and let you drawn it your own tears.

3/ The Giant Chess Puzzle Book by Xenon FrancoAnother big boy with 1001 puzzles. This one seems to explain briefly some tactical themes (like Susan Polgar's book) and organises each chapter by themes. Not tactical themes, but less leading themes like "defense and counter" or "endgames" and are gradually more difficult.
https://www.amazon.com/Giant-Chess-Puzzle-Book/dp/1906454205/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1479944724&sr=1-1&keywords=The+Giant+Chess+Puzzle+Book

4/ Tactics Times 2 by Tim Brennan and Carson. The second version. It seems to have improved from the first volume wich was already a big hit. Also with 1001 problems, it seems very much suited for players up until 1600 ELO. AND it seems to have a good Epub format. Very readable on kindle.

https://www.amazon.com/Tactics-Time-Chess-Everyday-Players/dp/9056915371/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1479946629&sr=1-1&keywords=tactic+time+2

5/ 1001 Winning Chess sacrifices (and combinations, along with 1001 Brilliant ways to Checkmate from the same authors) - Fred ReinfeldI could have seperated them. But it seemed appropriate to me to but them together since they're from the same author and about their tactical content seem to complete each other. This one looks a little more complicated that the others (from the reviews I read) but still good enough to be on the list. The chapters are also organised by tactical themes.

https://www.amazon.com/Winning-Sacrifices-Combinations-Reinfeld-Classics/dp/1936490870/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1479946652&sr=1-3&keywords=fred+reinfeld

6/ Thousand Checkmate combinations - Viktor Henkin. Also with 1000 problems (there seem to be a pattern) it look like its chapters are organised by pieces (The Rook chapters, the bishop, the pawn, queen and bishop etc....). Each chapters doesnt exclude the other pieces! but seem to point out patterns on how particular ones work together. Very interesting.

7/ 1001 deadly Checkmates - John Nunn. PATTERN CONFIRMED. John Nunn is a renoun chess author. From what i read, he might be a little more difficult that the others. But his puzzles are also gradual. And it seem to work perfectly on kindle as well. Wich is nice

8/ Practical Chess Exercises: 600 lessons for tactics to strategy by Ray Cheng. Ok this one seems a little different from the others. It seems that he mixes in strategic problems. Here, the themes are blended together.

https://www.amazon.com/Practical-Chess-Exercises-Lessons-Strategy/dp/1587368013/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

9/ Sharpen your tactics: 1125 brillant sacrifices, combinations and studies by Anatoly Lein and Archangelsky. Nice touch from this book is that they seem to give you the game from where they took the problem out. So you can see it play out in context. It marks its problems with * (one * = easy, *** = hard etc...)

https://www.amazon.com/Sharpen-Your-Tactics-Sacrifices-Combinations/dp/1880673134/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1479946743&sr=1-1&keywords=sharpen+your+tactics

10/ The complete Chess Workout: train your brain with 1200 puzzles - by Richard Palliser. It also seems to be organised by themes like "Attacking" or "Loose pieces and overloading" or "Endgame". A well rounded puzzle book.

https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Chess-Workout-puzzles-Everyman/dp/1857445325/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1479947041&sr=1-1&keywords=the+complete+chess+workout

EDIT: 11/ Winning Chess Puzzles for Kids (and winning chess exercices for kids) by Jeff Coakley

Don't let it fooled you by its title. It's suppose to be as difficult if not more than Susan Polgar's book. Beside the fact that it has also around thousand puzzles, it's refreshing the way they wrote it. Definitely worth checking out as well! If you live like me in France, Belgium or Benelux well... Good luck because the lowest price i found for this books is 98$. Go figure wink.png

https://www.amazon.com/Winning-Chess-Puzzles-Kids-Coakley/dp/189552511X/ref=pd_sim_14_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=KY4GQ4FM1C0392EF6WZN

12/ 1001 chess exercises for Beginners by Masetti. Another well rounded puzzle book. Seem to be a good continuation of Polgar's book. Beware, it seems that the diagrams are a little smaller than the usual.

https://www.amazon.com/1001-Chess-Exercises-Beginners-Workbook/dp/9056913972

13/ Chess tactics for Students by John Bain. Again, seems to be a well rounded puzzle book, organized be themes, with about 450 puzzles. A typical puzzle book wich puts direct in action without long explanation of what are pins etc.. (not saying it's a bad thing!)

https://www.amazon.com/Chess-Tactics-Students-John-Bain/dp/0963961403/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480031327&sr=8-1&keywords=john+bain+chess

Well, I think that's about it... Please let me know what you think of the list and if you have comments on particular books. I didn't read them, the remarks that i wrote are from amazon reviews. You can check them out (i'm not lying wink.png).  There are thousand books. I picked a selection that appear quite a bit on the forum and have good reviews.

And yes, if you can concentrate, chess.com has a great tactical trainer. But i hate working/studying on the computer. That's why books. LOVE'EM

I go now rest, it's 1:30 AM here not sure why i decided to post it just now!

NB: Here's a link to a thread that assembles some awesome lists

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/big-ol-list-of-beginner-books-etc

jambyvedar

I will just comment in the list in this thread. All are great books, but I prefer tactics book that has things like pin, fork etc, rather than exclusive mate problems book. The hardest book in the list is Zenon's Franco's book.

Another good tactic book is 1001 Chess Exercise for Beginners by Franco Masetti.  Even thought it has a beginner in its title, this is harder than Chess Tactics for Champion by Polgar. So if anybody is looking for another tactic book after they fully study/understand the Chess Tactics for Champion by Polgar, I recommend this book.

https://www.amazon.com/1001-Chess-Exercises-Beginners-Workbook/dp/9056913972

Another good tactic book is the Utimate Chess Puzzle book by Emms. This book is on the same level of the Franco book.

https://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Chess-Puzzle-Book/dp/190198334X

The Franco book and the Emm book I listed here are not a beginners tactic book.

More beginner book list

Winning Chess Exercise for Kids by Coackley

Winning Chess Puzzle for KIds by Coackley

These Coackley books are on the same level(or harder)  of the Chess Tactics for Champion by Polgar. They are good tactics book to use after the Polgar book.

Thanks, I edited it. Didn't know Franco's book was hard. Seemed to be quite suitable happy.png

ed1975

Chess Tactics for Students by Bain.

Fedec

It actually was on my list. Just forgot it sad.png thanks, i edited it wink.png
Does nobody have some experience or review about one of the book in the list they've read? I'm sure you did read at least one of them wink.png

303 Tactical Puzzles by Albertson

This book is harder than the Chess Tactics for Champion by Polgar. But i love the puzzles in this book. In one of the review in amazon, he complained that it is not arrange thematically. But I believe the book is intentionally created like that. In real games, you don't have a clue on what tactical theme you are looking for. But at the last part of the book, you can see the index of theme. If you are looking for a cheap book that has puzzles that in not arrange thematicaly, this book is perfect for you.

World's Champion Guide to Chess by Polgar.

This is a good first tactic book for beginner. It is easier than the World Champion's Guide to Chess by Polgar. Thought this book cover chess introduction and some endgames, 90% of the book's contents are tactics problems. The problems here are great for absolute beginners. I believe this is one the best tactic book created as a first tactic book for beginner.

Progressive Tactics:1002 Progressively Challenging Chess Tactics.

This book looks like another good beginner tactic book.

Predator at the Chessboard vol I and II

I've heard a lot of good of this one. But not really a puzzle book, or is it?

dannyhume
Not purely puzzle book, but 1200 or so Tactics positions can be treated like a puzzle book if you ignore the text. For a list of puzzle books, check out "Dan Heisman's Book Recommendations"... he has a section devoted to Tactics books.
Fedec

Just found out that it's content is free on their website

http://www.chesstactics.org/ If you've the courage on reading on a screening (wich i don't have wink.png)

Dan Heisman's book recommendation can only be good. Some of the books a listed are listed by him as well. But i kinda wanted some review from players, here, of what they thought on particular books i listed. I already extended the list to 13 books. Which is fine! But the point wasn't really to create an endless list (because hundreds of good tactic books exists) but more to get feedback from some books that I've seen have been recommended the most in other posts here wink.png

Has anyone read this one? Improve your chess tactics by Neishtadt

https://www.amazon.fr/Improve-Your-Chess-Tactics-2011-04-16/dp/B01K15AHW4/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1480205075&sr=8-8&keywords=Yakov+Neishtadt

I love the fact the it is divided in two parts: One classical with puzzle organized by theme and the other part an revision with no hint (randomn puzzles).

t_taylor

I have improve your chess and like it. He has several examples with explanation then at the end of each chapter has puzzles. it is fairly difficult.

Fedec

yes i heard it wasn't an easy read. Might be best to get a smaller, easier tactic book and this one to follow happy.png Even though i love the idea of 5334 puzzles, it might not be my first choice because of the randomness of the puzzles (and it is HUGE!!). Do you know another book that kind of mixes it (a part organised by theme and another without?)

Fedec

Interesting. It seems that, besides Neihstadt's book, they're fairly advanced. If not, at least for confirmed intermediate players (1500 and up). Would you agree?

just_kos

Solitaire Chess by Thinkfun has 80 endgames, from beginner to expert. Got it at Barnes & Noble. If nothing else, it'd be a great learning tool for kids and beginners (like myself). The big book that comes with it has the "boards" and there are K, Q, 2 B, 2 N, 2 R and 2 pawns.

t_taylor

did anyone mention chess tactics workbook by al woolum? it has many easy puzzles like Bain's book plus some more difficult ones.

t_taylor

I'm borrowing The Art of Chess Combination right now and like it. It has explanations instead of just puzzles. Don't know if in algebraic notation or just descriptive

jambyvedar

Worthy to be included on the list.

Winning Chess Tactics by Seirawan.

https://www.amazon.com/Winning-Chess-Tactics-Everyman/dp/1857443861

This book by Seirawan is perhaps the most entertaining for a beginner. Seirawan is a  gifted writter.

Chess Tactics by Paul Little Wood

https://www.amazon.com/Chess-Tactics-Batsford-Book/product-reviews/0713489340/ref=cm_cr_dp_see_all_btm?ie=UTF8&reviewerType=all_reviews&showViewpoints=1&sortBy=recent

Jonathan Speelman's Chess Puzzle book

https://www.amazon.com/Jon-Speelmans-Chess-Puzzle-Book/dp/1904600964

Fedec

Cheers
Didn't know those ones, except Seirawan (but his isn't really a tactic puzzle book)

ed1975

I used to have Littlewood. If I recall correct, this book is mostly an instruction manual, not a puzzle book. But I may be wrong happy.png
