Teaching Children and No Stress Chess

My 5 year old son is interested in chess and knows the names of the pieces.  I have seen a chess game variation called No Stress Chess.  The game uses cards displaying the various pieces and how they move along with a special board to help beginners learn how to play.  See below for a product description from the manufacturer.

This game would be good for new players due to the cards that show how each piece moves.  My son could play this game with other family members and friends who do not know how to play regular chess.  The game has very good ratings on amazon.com with 27 out of 28 rating it a 5/5.

Does anyone have experience with this game or have any tips to teach young children how to play chess?

No stress Chess Product Description from the Manufacturer
Finally, a way to learn chess without stress! The secret? An innovative deck of action cards. Each depicts a chess piece and how it moves. Once you become comfortable with the moves and powers of each chess piece, you can flip the two-sided board over and play standard chess. Includes rules for two variations of playing using the action cards, and all the necessary rules for standard chess.

We have a set for beginners here in the States that has the moves of each piece printed on the base of the piece (facing only that player).  I forget what it's called...anyone?

As far as teaching kids....patience!  You can also try the "half" chess sets that are available in teacher catalogues.  They are smaller boards with only half the usual pieces.

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum.  I was not sure if this should be posted in the forum for Equipment or the forum for Scholastic Chess.

A few years later and the kids enjoyed "no stress chess". It was great to help them learn how the pieces move. And a fun game to play, you move a piece based on a random card and get lots of interesting positions. Also good for people at different skill levels as it is part chess knowledge and lots of luck to move the piece you want to. Now they prefer the real game :)

Thanks for letting us know.  I was curious about that product.  Good idea introducing the element of chance into the game, thereby levelling the playing field somewhat, and taking some of the stressful seriousness away.  The stress many beginners feel when taking chess too seriously often makes the game less appealing to them.

This product has excellent reviews on amazon.com.  And PolarChess, it's okay to discuss chess products here, whether or not one plays chess on this site.  The purpose of the forums is to exchange chess-related information.  If product reviews boost sales of a useful product, then this is good for chess.

This is a company advertising a product.  This members game history reflects they do not even play chess games here at Chess.com.

So?

It's a great idea.

I have been using no stress chess to teach my partner how to play. We started with the pieces witht he moves labeled on them, but that didn't work very well. It also has the great benefit of tying my hands as well, to keep both players on a least somewhat more equal footing when starting. Yes, it doesn't reflect an actual gane as it unfolds but it does help the player become more conforable with the game and more willing to make the transition into playing for real.

Great idea! Thanks.

I have no affiliation with the product. I played chess on chess.com for a year or so with some friends but not recently. I posted my experience with a product that my kids enjoyed and helped them learn the game loved by millions including us. I thought my review might help others with kids who would like to get them into the game. Would love to play more games on here, its a great site. My games in recent years have been OTB with friends or kids rather than online.
