I tried just changing the extension to .pgn and it worked.
I typically save pgn files (i.e., whether the file extension was originally text or pgn) with the following format...
file.pgn.txt
then, depending on how I want to use the file I will remove either the .pgn or .txt extension. -or- simply ensure that the last extension in the file name is appropriate (.pgn or .txt) for how I intend to use it
