The FIDE chess set. Not everyone's cuppa ...

... but I just had to Wink. I was very impressed with the minimalist carving on most pieces. The knights are a love/hate thing I know. I actually DO like them but they kinda remind me of this guy in the last pic ...

It's an interesting set, Ron, but the crenulations in the king's crown are rather thick and heavy, and the collars on the king and bishop a bit small in diameter.  The knight has a chiseled appearance I like.

Truth be told though, my favorite part of the post is the caricature.  I can definitely say to it, "Yes Sir, I do like it."

Thanks Bob. I was determined not to let another World Championship set become too rare to find. Of course when I started wanting the vintage Chavet set back in the early '90's there was no internet and I had no idea what I was looking for Cry

Good point, Ron, as a collector it's better to be safe than sorry.  By the way, I think I should have said the ribs of the king's crown are rather wide and heavy looking instead of the crenulations.  Despite the idiosyncrasies, it is not an unattractive set.

Best,

Bob

Ronbo, I too have been tempted by this set. When I first saw it a couple of years back I thought the knights were strange looking in profile (I think they looked great face on), but over time they sort of grew on me. The best way to describe the other pieces is to say that they're "stout," as opposed to delicate. I wish it was available in another color like rosewood or sheesham.

BTW, what size board are you using in the picture?

cgrau

I've considered this set but never pulled the trigger.

lofina_eidel_ismail

I like the pawns, cute!

King lacks masculinity😐

DubroMan

It's nice set but it's never gonna be famous like Reykjavik 1972 set

Ronbo710

Hi It is the standard DGT board with 2" squares.

That is the perfect adjective to describe the set, Lou.  I couldn't find the right word.

Fortunately, it's not as stout as the Mechanics Institute set, but then again hefty is a better adjective for it.

The set always seemed toy-like to me, something you'd give a one year old to play with like a set of blocks.  Hey, maybe that's a way of getting little tykes liking chess pieces before they can play ... or hating them if they swallow the king's finial and it upsets their tummy.

As if the Mechanics Institute set isn't whimsical enough, I thought it needed just another touch of whimsy. Smile

Is this your set?

Eyechess

This set can be bought for $180.

Here is the link:

I am on a self-imposed spending freeze, otherwise I would jump on it.

Fighting Bob, I have the perfect set for your kids.

Thanks, Ron, if they offered it in sheesham or rosewood for that price I'd buy it.

BurnAmos

Bought several years will at Amazon for about $ 50. not yet exist, marketed the FIDE set.
Any resemblance to reality is pure coincidence. Sometimes breathes inspiration, though the root is some variation from Dublin set of the XIX.

Where did you got this set?

cgrau

Arlindo, didn't ChessBazaar knock that set off?

BurnAmos

Chuck, and don't know.

My set is sold by Regency Chess Company, an English seller. Is if ChessBazaar that made this set ?

The Regency Chess Company sells this set 50 Euros. And before ChessBazaar. Good Subject to research!
