Themed Chess Pieces

Hey

I'm considering to buy a themed chess pieces set, the sac crusades chess set. But i'm worried that the pieces migth be to large to play probably, the King is 14 cm and pawn 7 cm

Anyone have any experience with pieces of this size?

Post a picture or a link so we can see the set. How heavy are the pieces? In my experience many players won't use non-staunton sets, so maybe you should consider this set as a work of art and get a cheap plastic set for actually playing, if you don't already have one. This set definitely wont cut it in tnmts, I don't think anything but staunton sets are approved by USCF and I'm guessing Denmark has the same rule

The pieces I found online (HOS) are tall with relatively small bases.  Many of these sets are intended for display, not play.  Unless the are hollow and very heavily weighted, they would be extremely easy to knock over while playing, and the narrow bases contribute to that problem.  It would appear that the small bases are designed to allow the pieces to fit on a standard chess board, but that concession renders them potentially awkward for play.  Nice looking, artistic set, but not very functional, and I'd never intend them for tournament play.

Tournament play is not the goal for the next couple of years, and did not intent to use it any where but at home.

But the points you list are my exact concerns.

My hopes where to have a good looking chess set permenent in my living room with pieces both good for playing and for good for the eye.

I've never been a big fan of "themed" chess sets, mainly because they're hard to tell which piece is which, and I enjoy the beauty of standard Staunton pieces anyway.  If you get this set, order a standard Staunton set and board to play with, and set up this set as a display set.

There is something to the beauty of a lot of themed sets, but they're best left to look at while you play using a Staunton set.
