Tournament set recommendations (wood)?

Sort:

I'm looking for some suggestions for buying a traditional style board and pieces, both wood, either together or separate, with numbers and letters, storage isn't necessary (but not frowned on). My budget allows up to a couple hundred US dollars.

Links would be great, but if not, just some search seeds so I can find what is be suggested.

Thanks

Let me expand your board possibilities by pointing out that any art store carries vinyl lettering and numbers.  Bit of a pain to put on, but take your time and it looks great!

I'm a little confused as to what style you are looking for.  Most popular are the German knight tournament sets largely because of the DGT sets used in major tournaments.  No reason you have to go that route but they're both inexpensive and readily available.  Does the set have to be blitzworthy?  There are some beautiful sets that you might not want getting knocked to the floor and then there are sturdier sets that can take abuse.  Check out HOS, ChessBazaar, and Official Staunton.  Good luck and maybe do a "search forums" to uncover some earlier threads.

Here's one with some maybe good threads:

i dont get why other countries have that players bring their own sets instead of just putting down sets theirselves

House of Staunton has some nice choices for your budget.

A couple of the "heavy hitters" on the forum have recommended this as a great blitz set:

Cheap, sturdy, attractive, and nicely weighted.  I'm looking for an excuse to pull the trigger.

Oh and here's a nice folder.

As to clubs providing sets to play on outside the USA, I'm sure the ones provided in Scandinavia are quite adequate, but we've had complaints in the forums that not all European countries provide good equipment.  No personal experience, just relaying what I've read.

I have been to a few USCF Sponsored Tournaments here in tht USA. The majority of players use the Basic Solid Plastic set & a vinyl roll up board in green & white squares. A few brought fine wood boards & wood pieces like about 3 of them. A very few vinyl boards had brown squares & a few black & white squares. The majority were green & buff squares. Hope this helps.!

Chess is not subsidized by the government in the United States.

Chess Clubs charge very little if anything to join.  Most simply do not have the cash or the space for chess equipment.  There are some that do, but this is not the norm.

For example, the state chess federation in my state only charges $10.00US a year for membership.

You might have to narrow it down a little... there are many options.

Maybe start with what the set is going to be used for?

Here's one of them. It doesn't have a clock but it looks like a decent enough set.
