Hi All - Just received this beautiful set from Chess House of the Ultimate Chess pieces in genuine ebony and boxwood. Same size as the original cream and black plastic set with 35/8" Kings and extra queens. LOVE this design and triple weighting. And the carrying case is nice but I really think a nice oak box wood be more fitting. My original plastic version has taken the case over anyway happy.png . Thanks for Looking  ...

Very nice Ron, they look really great. Does it come with that nice case?

Hi Mike - Yes the zippered case comes with it. As soon as I bought mine the page went to back order lol. Here is their link ... https://www.chesshouse.com/products/3-5-8-ultimate-style-wooden-chess-pieces-ebony

Nice pieces. What are the size of the squares on the board in your photo? Would you describe the pieces as tournament size?

Ronbo710

Yes I would say tournament size. The board is the standard DGT electronic board with 2" squares.

very nice

Looks very similar to the Reykjavik type set from the pics. Is the dgt board 2” or 2 1/8” (55mm) squares? Nice sturdy set.

TundraMike

Would be nice if more sets came with a foam-fitted case as this is. Can't add that much more to the price of the set and you would have a place to store it vs. all the wooden chess boxes you need. I use plastic Plano boxes for most of the sets these days.

Very nice set Ron, and that price they list is pretty good for real ebony, especially with that case included.

Yes 55mm just over 2". Never noticed before lol.

@ Ronbo710: If you don't mind me asking, how does this set compare size-wise to the new Plastic Ultimate chess set sold by Shelby at ACE? Is it smaller or just about the same size in height, width and weight dimensions of all the pieces in the set? Thanks Ron, much appreciated.

Thank you for asking. This wooden set is identical in size to the earlier cream and black version of the plastic Ultimate chess men (3 5/8" King). The later more yellow piece version is larger (3 3/4" King). Here are some comparison pics with the vintage (original) Ultimate chess pieces (left)  ...

Ahh, yes I can see the wood set is larger like the newer version plastic Ultimate chess set. This is a very nice set you have acquired and the case that comes with it is a nice plus. A very nice addition to your collection Ronbo. Enjoy for many years to come and thank you for the pictures.

Not really. The felt under the wooden pieces raises them somewhat. Here is the newer set 3 3/4" yellow King next to the boxwood King ...

Wow! That is a stark difference. I had intentions of obtaining the same set you just got from the chess house website but I'll hold off a bit to see if any sales come up for either July 4th or Labor day. Presently they are out of stock of this set. I will order the new cream colored plastic Ultimate chess sets that Shelby is slated to put in a new order in once his present stock is depleted. Perhaps sometime in the fall. Hopefully available for holiday shopping. Same specs as the new version like the one on the left in  this photo you provided but the new correct hue/swatch of cream color for the light army.

Good day Ronbo 710,

Is this wooden Ultimate set sold by Chesshouse the same weight as the new plastic Ultimate  chess set @ 64oz. sold by American Chess Equipment? I know the chess house website  are currently out of stock but I'd like to order one when they are available once again. Thank you kindly.

Nice, but perfectly ordinary looking pieces. A million billion Staunton sets look like that.

Quite alright by me. I want to use the set for rapid type games it was built to take the punishment. Not too many fragile points on any of the pieces and nicely weighted. The pawns are a nice selling point IMHO. Good heft to all the pieces in general.
