My Romanian Coffeehouse set is made out of Hazelwood.
Unusual/Exotic Wood
There are also some sets that are made of olive wood, typically in Mediterrean regions such as Spain, Italy or Israel, I think that they have a very pretty and unique texture, for example:

I have one "exotic" wood padauk and for the rest sheesham, golden rosewood and indian rosewood. I'm intrigued by tazmanian blackwood, it looks very nice.

Question for all you experts - is ebony used regularly ?
THanks 😀🌞😋
Ebony is quite common for higher end sets. It will one day be placed on the restricted list and be banned from export if the supply runs low.
Thanks Knightforkscafe. I have a Staunton set from India ( seems to be fairly high end) and the black pieces are very very solid - possibly ebony. My 1980 ish Lardy set is definitely not ebony (a brown stained Light wood ), but has an unusual, and lovely, "chunky" design with a very angular cut to the knights outline.

I've seen some stunning rosewood sets. The grain was fairly visible and I formed the impression it may have been a fairly hard wood ? In hindsight I'm wondering if it was only the black pieces that were rosewood.... Leather bases and weighted. I think the chess shop in London had some lovely rosewood sets. Does anyone have info about the Lardy sets ? I think the company have been gone for many years. THANKS.
What are some unusual wood combinations for your chess sets?
I own some Padauk and Sheesham sets and a few Filipino sets made from Narra and Kamagong but the overwhelming majority of my collection is Boxwood and Ebony. I would love to see/hear about any unique sets out there.
