Vintage Dubrovnik Chess Set 1950?

Sort:
goodknightmike

Early 1950s Dubrovnik set,  Kings 88mm in height. But owner says this set was given to his friend at the 1950 Dubrovnik Olympiad for being a runner.

Could there be 2 versions made for the 1950 Dubrovnik Olympiad?

I thought we as chess collectors were here to promote collecting chess sets. Sorry If I offended you by promoting chess collecting with your pictures. I will remove your pictures at the sake of our "CHESS LOVERS".

I don't mind, really, ... But linking to blogs where interesting pics are found is a *very good* way to promote collecting chess sets.

P. S. Nope, the pics still don't show ... I'm intrigued.

Wow, what a nice set!

This is definitely the 2nd generation re-design (by Maurović), so I seriously doubt these pieces could be given away in 1950. Most probably they were produced later after 1951. This redesign was extensively used in most of the tournaments in Yugoslavia through 50's and even 60's & 70's, and was sold in stores where Bobby Fischer picked up one for himself in 1970.

Here's an example of a Dubrovnik set given away as a trophy to a local tournament winner in 1968, note the additional ornamentation:

Thanks for your assessment of this older Dubrovnik set. And thanks for the pictures of the ornate 1968 Dubrovnik set.  A very beauiful set. Have you seen any of the "second generation" Dubrovniok sets offered anywhere for sale? One would think you would see these vintage sets offered somewhere since many were made and they were used in touramnets from the 1950s to the 70s?

Can one tell which Dubrov ya got and the mfg date from the storage box the set came in ? I have the red box with the coa attached label.

Not sure if I understand your question. Most likely, the vintage Dubrovnik sets did not have a label ot Mfg date.

How many versions of 1950 vintage Drubovnik's do we have ?

1. One is from GM Bruno Parma

2. GM Vasja Pirc version. The Noj reproduction is based on this set ?

3. On this thread is a third version of 1950 Drubovnik.

GM Parma also seems to have an authentic Havana chess set as well, except Izmet describes it as 4" while it is actually club sized 4.4" version.

I measured the Cubans, King is about 4 inches:

99, 80, 75, 73, 56, 56 mm for King, Queen, Bishop, Knight, Rook & Pawn respectively.

This pictures make me think that the 1950 factory didn't really care much for making exact size sets, or this set have replacement pices at some point.
