Wanted: Peter Ganine Sculptured 'Gothic' or 'Superba' Chess Pieces

Hello,

I couldn't find a classifieds section on this sight so I will depend on the charity of others to direct me more in accordance with the terms of this forum.

I'm looking for a mint condition set of the 'Sculptured' Gothic (or Superba) Chess pieces; preferably in the larger Tournament Edition, which were available through Pleasantime Games.

I'm not a collector, so while the box and packaging make it easier to gift, I don't so much care about the box and accessories, just that the pieces themselves are like new.

Its is intended as a gift for a teenager who is quite taken with them. If finding one gives me another way to connect with him over chess, I'll take it!

They're all over eBay. Search "Ganine Tournament Gothic chess set" and you'll have your choice. I got mine with a box that had a slightly torn corner (but not completely split) with pieces in excellent condition for ~$70 as I recall. I certainly didn't pay $100, so don't let the proud gouge you.

Hello,

Thanks for replying. I can see them, but I'm in Canada, and no one seems to want to ship to Canada; by which  I mean, a lot of ebay sellers can't be bothered to ship 'internationally'; this despite, ironically, that fact that a lot of them multiple list their items on ebay.ca too.

That's not terribly uncommon. For some reason, lots of American sellers will ship all around the world, but what we see on our end is the now all too familiar statement,"This seller may not ship to Canada. Contact the vendor for more details", and almost invariably, they do not.

I'm not on ebay, so it may have something to do with different types or levels of accounts or service options one subscribes when joining the fellowship. When you follow the ebay.ca posts, you just come back around to an American vendor. Those products are not actually in Canada.

So, that is why I posted here, hoping to reach a group of dedicated enthusiasts who might have lost affection for their set. I'm waiting for replies for two more sellers, but I'm not hopeful. Otherwise its just a matter of waiting I suppose. Thanks again!

Tim

P.S. Typically I have things delivered to a US address just minutes from Vancouver to work around the condition, but Covid shut that avenue down with the border.

Update: I purchased a mint condition set off  ebay for $48, with the original box (in good condition), but no board, which I don't want because I'm not a collector. However, every penny I saved on winning the set at auction would be required to pay shipping to Canada which is ridiculous. Then there is tax and duties. Nothing ventured, nothing saved! I'll take a picture and attach it, for those who are unfamiliar with the set.

My set arrived a few days ago, in mint condition 'with' the original box and board that I didn't expect. The pieces are pristine, even the bottom felt, as is the box and original instructions. It doesn't look like it has ever been played. I'm going to remove the felt to triple weight the pieces to improve the play of this narrow based lean and lanky design.

Then I am going to decide what to do to better reveal the black side; the color is too dark (as is often the case) to reveal the relief of the sculptured faces, which is the joy of this unique set. I might simply soda blast them to remove the shine (which could be easily renewed). If more is required, I might possibly airbrush one or both sides in complementary colors.

I will post pictures.
