Weighted plastic chess pieces

I am fairly new to the chess scene and I am getting ready to buy my first weighted chess pieces. With so many chess retailers, collecters, and enthuasists on here I figure this would be a good place to ask some questions about pieces.

I've been reading about chess pieces and I have seen where some sets may be inferior to others. Is it a common occurance for the weights to come loose? Is it something I should expect? Are loose weights an easy fix?

I have also seen where some have said their plastic sets have chipped or cracked. Is that a common thing as well. Or do some companies just sell a better product than others?

Two sets I am interested in are...

Has anyone had any experience with these sets? Can anyone recommend them? I know the ultimate set isnt the ideal color but i love the pawns and  bishops. just wish the king had a better cross.

You will probably get A LOT of opinions about other brands/styles to consider, although the two you linked are both high quality plastic sets that should last you for many years.

I own the Marshall set (sold by House of Staunton), which is fairly heavy and very "substantial" feeling, although the Natural color is somewhat "buttery," but not as yellow as the Ultimate set.

I don't mind people sharing their sets and links. I enjoy perusing all the threads about other sets.

I actually got the USCF buying guide in the mail yesterday and I can't set it down. Its like Playboy for chess players. Now all I need to do is sell a kidney. LOL!

I did read in another thread where someone said it would be nice to nix and match sets. That would be cool to assemble a set piece by piece. Of course some would frown and balk on the idea but I'd think it would be cool.

What is the best thing to store them in?

Cool! I'll check them out. Thanks!

I really like those solid plastic sets.  They aren't as heavy as weighted sets, but still heavy enough to feel good in the hand. Since they have no weights to become unglued, you don't ever have to think about loose weights.

I love the Reykjavik set as well. The style of the bishops is what hooked me. I don't like the pointy head bishops. I also love those plus size pawns of the Ultimate set.

I have both. Personally I would choose the Ultimate Chess Pieces. With the price of $20. The Reykjavik is about $18. Spend the extra $2 for a much superior set in my opinion. Don't get me wrong the Reykjavik is a good set but the Pawns to me are to weakest made piece of the set. UCP is beefier and weighs more.

Deluxe Tournament bag along with a mailing tube to store your roll up board in.

Mailing Tube you can get them from you local Staples store. They sell them in 24 inch length. You will have to cut them down to 21 inches.

So I ordered my chess set. I went with the Ultimate set cause it just looks more durable and sturdy than the Reykjavik set. I also grabbed a vinyl roll up board to try out. I am going back for one of those simulated wood mouse pads. Those look like they're awesome. I don't play bullet so I won't need the slippery surface.

I like the wood printed mouse pad boards. The full color vinyl boards have a better print quality than the wood printed mouse pad boards.

I do not have experience with these particular sets, but I highly recommend you get the heaviest plastic chess set. If you get a light one you'll feel like heavier is better.

I own two weighted plastic chess sets. One is "triple weighted" chess set which looks exactly like the cheapest plastic chess pieces you see everywhere. I do not know who manufactures them or if different manufacturers make them, but the one I got which is at this link (Here Amazon link ) was rather crappy. The bottom covers were peeling off, and the weights inside aren't glued well so when you shake a piece it makes clinging noise inside. I am unhappy with this set.

But this other set I got, which is on Amazon is referred to as "quadruple weighted plastic chess set" is excellent. Here is link to that Quadruple Weighted Chess set . This set is excellent. It is made out of nicer plastic. Polished better. It has better design with its wider bases. The weights inside do not make sound. The pelts are very good. This one I would recommend to anybody. I recommend spending a little more on this one if you want a plastic chess set.

Only thing to keep in mind is that if you plan on carrying your chess set somewhere then the weighted pieces will be kind of heavy. For the purpose of carrying the set you probably should get the cheapest unweighted pieces.

American Chess Equipment is awesome. My Ultimate Chess Set was set to delivered today until the Fedex driver had a moment and decided he couldn't or was too lazy to deliver my package today. He even put a delivery exception on it saying it had the wrong address when it clearly had the right address on it from the get go. So I got Wood Expressions on the phone and in a half an hour the lady on the phone got Fedex in line and my package reset for delivery. I didn't get the lady's name but she's awesome. Whoever she was I am grateful.

@PBKid yeah that can be frustrating. What really frustrating is being sent the wrong set. angry.png Happy to hear that your set will be delivered tomorrow. I am sure that you will enjoy your new set. I know that I enjoy it. By the way what color was the vinyl chessboard you ordered?
