I will second the motion for Chernev's Logical Chess, Move by Move.
The analysis will not choke the life out of newer players, and provides a nice balance of explanations.
If you are willing to study hard you should get The Soviet Chess Primer .
I have read chess books before but they either have too many notations for me to understand or it covers only the basics that I already know. Are there any books for 1000 rapid-rated players that not only enhance their game but also improves their notation reading?
