What are the best wooden chess pieces for BLITZ play on the market right now !?

I'm just "window shopping " and wondering at the same time.

3.75 or 4.0 inch kings.

I remember while ago Chessbazaar had GM blitz chess set especially designed for blitz play durable pieces etc...

What are the options now !?

I quite like those chess pieces in the video as well , I think they are great for blitz play, especially having nice wide bases and durable feel to it.

Does any one know where to purchase them or what's they called?

I think you can't go wrong with the wood version of the best plastic blitz pieces, the Ultimate Chess Pieces:

They look and feel great...getting very expensive but I'd say probably still worth it.

Heavy and huge, I would think that these (with the kings' finials removed) would bludgeon any blitz opponent into oblivion.

These ones are pretty tough too.

I agree w @GOVEDO. I had a set of ‘German knights’ in my park bag for a good span of time years ago. They were great in the parks!

Does that quarter inch really make that much of a difference though?

Why is this set more expensive, then the others?  What's special about this set?

I don't really like the rooks , tops of it to be exact, it's easy to break those what should I call them?  "Crowns " they are very long and easy to break . I had one good quality set with similar rooks myself and after one good fall, especially being weighted piece one of the crown just broke.

Looks very nice .! Definitely looks durable, plus wide bases for stability , the only finials on the kings might be fragile but that's fine.

I think those pieces are great overall, but do you think 4.25 king with 72.9 ounces  might be a bit uncomfortable for playing speed chess?  Also with so much weight , I don't know if they can handle fall on a concrete for example, they might just crack. What do you think?

As someone once wrote on this forum, nothing can beat Chopra german knights 3.75 inch wooden chess pieces. Durable, affordable, and a classic. Trust me, I played a lot of blitz games with them.  And even if you manage to break one of the pieces, you will not have to cry over your bad luck.

Basic Staunton design, which is good, durable pieces with no fragile elements, the only thing I don't like about this set is pawns , they are very small , almost tiny.  I prefer tall pawn , easy to grab, especially handy in a time scramble etc...

ESP-918

Criteria wise almost perfect set, wide bases , durable rooks especially, king finials, tall pawns, weighted nicely . The only thing is the queen with it sharp crown , they should of just made it nice in club series queen smooth finish.

I'm not going to lie this chess set looks just ugly to me I don't know is it just me or ...?

Finials: the kings's finials (at least in my set) are removable.  They came with three different finials per king.

Size/weight: Yes, that could be an issue but you could also look at it as an arm-strength workout too. wink.png

Fall: That could definitely be an issue but any weighted wood set is likely to suffer from a fall as well as temperature/humidity variations over time.

If I understand/remember correctly, these sets were made as commemorative Mechanics Institute sets.  Maybe there are some Mechanics Institute alums that could comment on their durability.

The wide heavy bases of Frank Camaratta's Craftsman Knight set is perfect for blitz. But only if it's NOT MY SET being used/abused. They are not exactly cheap. But you DID say "the best", right? LOL

I would so hate to expose those beautiful knights to the abuse of Blitz and/or Armageddon.  Ugh.

Get pieces made out of Balsa wood. They’re lighter so you can move them faster. Give your opponent pieces made out of heavy oak.

Hahaha!  Merry Christmas, Ed!

I wouldn't buy this pieces, even for $100 . I mean I probably would if it was so cheap like hundred but you got my point.

This chess set is just hyped and done with good marketing , but absolutely terrible for blitz play .

Knights ears will fall sooner or later, king finials same story, sharp queen head completely unacceptable for blitz play etc. Soon after couple of rough blitz games this set will look ugly.

Don't get me wrong it's a beautiful chess set , it's a very nice quality LUXURY chess set , beautiful to play with :classical gamers, no time limits games, slow analysis and just as an art piece , but playing blitz with it ?  Terrible idea and uncomfortable. Maybe just for showing off if you are playing with Super GMsthen it's OK , status etc I wouldn't care about pieces brake , but other then that...

Since you are so worried about details breaking of, what about one of these sets?

"Berliner Style"

"Man Ray"

"Bauhaus"

Or, I think, Dubrovnik are quite low on protruding details as well.
