What board wood to choose?

Hello, I bought these Zagreb chess figures (Rosewood/Boxwood) and am unsure what kind of wood and wood colour would go best with them, that said I consider red wood and possible wenge, dark walnut or something similar right now, thou I am planning on buying a foldable board and am therefor limited in the sorts of wood I may choose from. Any ideas?

Nice set.  Many combinations would work nicely.  Walnut and maple is rarely a bad choice.

Mahogany and Maple is a good choice. Contrast is key and not matching colors. Dark colors need a lighter color and lighter colors need a dark color. Walnut and Maple are good as well but I believe Mahogany is a slightly better choice over Walnut in my opinion. Especially finished clear coat. Finished woods have a different look to them. Your veneered boards are usually unfinished or have a duller finish. Where your solid wood boards tend to have a satin to high gloss finish. Also woods change color over time. They either get darker or change color. Take Cherry for example is a pale pinkish color when freshly cut. Over time when exposed to oxygen and UV light turns to a crimson red several years later. Even Boxwood turns to a brownish gold color over time. From a blonde color when freshly cut. So choose a color that will be good for the woods over the ages. A wood worker would be the best person to ask this question to.
