What chess set do you use?

I use a chocolate-colored chess board, triple-weighted 3 3/4" chess pieces from House of Staunton (natural and black colors), a Chronos blitz clock (regular buttons), all in a black carryall tournament bag.

My backup set is an olive colored board with the game pieces (but in ivory/black color).

Erik, thanks for your warm welcome I received a few days ago. I'm wondering where you would suggest I buy a pretty good wood chess board ($100.00+ range) and a better set of chess pieces that would match and fit the board ($100.00+ range, again). It is for a very good friend who is NUTS about chess, and I need all of the above in a couple of months or so. The photos I see from CHESS CAFE and a couple other sales sites all look about the same ...It's dificult to make a judgement without seeing and touching them.

Thanks for any info you can give me.     The Coug ...

I like the oversized pink and green set that glows in the dark and not weighted.  I use that in tournament play and it has given me wonderful results (my opponent sometimes forgets what color he is).

(not to be confused with the Swastika thread

Speaking of Chess sets.  It's the thought that counts.

This chess set was made from rye bread by a prisoner at Auschwitz concentration camp for his SS guard.  The craftsman tried to form the brown (the German side) King to resemble Hitler.

Hitler became chancellor of Germany in 1933. In 1934 he became Fuehrer and Reich Chancellor.  So, the Nazi Party was in charge from 1933 through 1945.

During that time 400 decrees against Jews were issued.

In one of the first decrees, issued on July,19,1933, Jews were expelled from the German Chess Union.

Dang, I have quit a few sets of pieces but I own a great board, built like a mideval keep (small castle) with carved pillers kinda like Roman Venuses with a lift off top four on the floor, twim cam, 4 barrel carb 454, LOL... and a marble and ivory board with fantasy pieces- dragons and gargoyals, mideval pieces- knights of europe, and a set of Civil War pieces,  Wood love to have the brass and silver set of Egyptian Pharoes,  best I've seen!

WOW!

I don't know much about Rye Bread, what are the chances that the Chess set still exits at some Museum? Is there info on the maker of the set, etc? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I've only just begun to play chess. Right now I have a 15"x15" smoked glass chess board with clear and frosted glass, felt bottom, pieces. It cost $15 at Toys 'R' Us. So, I bought two of them just to have a back-up. I also have a cheap folding (curiously strong) magnetic chess set. I use it primarily as a visual aid to chess books when I'm out and about. When my game improves to the point that I wouldn't be embarrassed to own it, I'm going to get a chess table with 3" squares and a nice giant wooden chess set.

I discovered, just this past weekend, that there are two chess stores near my house (at one of them there was a tournament going on outside the store when I dropped by to buy the magnetic travel set, and there was a group of guys inside playing what I can only imagine to be "speed chess"... that was a tad bit intimidating.) This particular store, All The King's Men, had a an extensive collection of just beautiful chess sets and chess tables. If I persist with this hobby, I could see myself spending an inexcusable amount of money on old Russian rosewood pieces and so forth.
