Chess House has good stuff. I have a coupole of sets from them, as well as a travel set: https://www.chesshouse.com/collections/travel-chess-sets/products/9-milled-leather-travel-magnetic-chess-set-with-wood-pieces

Product is good, they are a good vendor.

Raphael Neff, owner of Chess House is first class.  A very reputable retailer - they will treat you right...

Yes, I think it is comfortable to play with. It takes getting used to at first but I like it.

kenardi

my experience, one of the best shops to purchase chess stuff from.

Saint_Anne

I have dealt with them for many years.  Very pleased.

A 9 inch board -- seems a little small for my taste.  I guess it depends, for a child with small hands will most likely be okay.

I use this set while traveling.  It's wonderful.  Really recommended for travelers who like to practice in 3d, and are traveling a lot.

I wear a Men’s Large in a glove size and this set is not too small for me.

Of course this is as an analysis set.

I find it fine to play with, I am a large guy with large hands.

I am not saying I would want to play a tournament with it but for a coffeehouse game it works well.

@ zeziux: I had my eye on this set from the Chess House earlier in the beginning of the year (Jan. 27th) and finally pulled the trigger on the purchase tonight (The aforementioned travel set). I've always like the small, stout and  robust little pieces. You can't go wrong when the approval rating is 97% or 33 out of 34 reviews with the majority giving it 5 stars. I think this will be a cool little travel companion of mine going forward. I believe this is one of many of their products you will enjoy to have as your own if this is one of your shopping preferences. Many good products to choose from in their sales inventory.

keep looking back at this set... just don't get it.

way too small.

way too crowded.

Prefer a full size board if i really need to move pieces around.

If you're traveling, just move the pieces in your head.

What I plan to do with the set is travel with an additional accompanying analysis 14" rollup vinyl board with 1.5" squares. True this board is a bit overcrowded for the playing pieces but it's the craftsmanship of the pieces that drew my attention to the purchase of the set. There will be ample room with the non magnetic analysis board and it will be very playable as well. I'm not that adept to move pieces in my head just yet, but I'm still working on my game to develop that particular skill and become more proficient throughout my matches.

if you are just looking at the pieces, take a look at these: https://www.chessusa.com/product/20-D09.html

What square dimensions would work best with this set?  The set is pictured on a board, but nothing is stated as to its size, and there is no recommendation as to what board would work best with the pieces.

Rsava

Hey Michael, I was going to message you. Just played a couple games this weekend with the set I got from you. What a joy to handle and play with. Such a nicely weighted set, well balanced, all the pieces just feel like a chess set should (IMHO).

Under the "Chess Piece DCetail" tab it states this:

  • Recommended Square Size: 1 1/4" - 1 1/2"

I have a slightly larger Mark of Westminster set (3 1/4" King) that is a nice set. Looks a bit different (not a French Staunton) than this one (especially the Knight).

I have the exact same pieces.  I also purchased the following wood (verneer) board from AmChessEq.com (Shelby Lorhman) which works very well with the pieces, for analysis purposes....

http://amchesseq.com/12-Wood-Chess-Board-with-125-Squares_p_24.html

Note the description of the board on the site gives overall dimensions as 12x12x2 inches.  In fact the dimensions are very close to 11.5x11.5x0.375 inches.  The square size is slightly larger than the advertised 1.25 inches - I measure about 1.28 inches.
