What does +- (-1.00) mean?

I know that +- means that White has a decisive advantage and 1.00 means that White has an advantage of one pawn.  The number (0.10) would mean 1/10th of a pawn. This is what I don't know, and what I see from chess engines - a negative number before (1.00), i.e. (-1.00). What does the negative number mean?

negative number? this means that black has advantage

Thanks for the response. I've read that article a few days ago and aleady know what +-, -+, = means, for example. I also know what +/- and -/+ means as well as a few other signs.

This is what I don't know, and what is not discussed in the article: the value (-) INSIDE the pawn value, i.e. +- (-2.40). Now, the value 2.40 would equate to a 2 and 4/10ths pawn advantage.

What is a -2.40 pawn advantage? I see this all the time in chess engine analysis.

Eebster

In most engines, +2.40 means that white has a 240 centipawn advantage, and -2.40 means black has a 240 centipawn advantage. However, in Rybka and some other engines, +2.40 means the player to move has a 240 centipawn advantage (regardless of color) and -2.40 means the other player has the advantage.

"centipawn" ??

Eebster

Sorry, a centipawn is 0.01 pawns. The prefix "centi-" usually means "hundredth."

Thanks Eebster. That makes sense. When I use the Fritz/Chessbase interface and play bad chess moves on purpose, Black has the advantage when I see (-2.40) and White has the advantage when I see (2.40). So, the negative number means that Black is having a very good game. Smile

Eebster...I truly laughed out load when you dropped the "centipawn" into your post.  That was great - thanks!

Well centipawn is a frequently used term in chess programs.

The fritz interface, and most other interfaces give pos numbers for positions favoring white, neg for positions favoring black -- whose move it is makes no difference... but be aware that the free engine GUI Arena defaults to (the VERY ANNOYING) positive means good for the side with the move, negative means bad for the side with the move... so positive and negative switch every half-move! It's really awful. Arena is the only gui that does this that I'm aware of.
