get roman dzindzi's first few dvds and go from there. volumes 1-9 and his endgame dvds. get all the ones where primary target audience is beginners. a lot of his dvds are very very advanced, only appropriate for high level players and people who are specialists in certain openings. so don't get the wrong ones.

I do think that Stean's book is quite good, but Capa's is a real classic.

After finishing that, you can try getting a copy of an old and very thin book (just 130 pages): "Modern Ideas in Chess" by Richard Reti. IMO this is the best chess book ever written.

Wow, you think really highly of Reti's book! I have never read it, but I will check it out now.

Why do you consider this book to be so outstanding? Is it good for players rated 2000+?

Could you tell me, please, if there is an algebraic edition available?

I wholeheartedly agree that Modern Ideas in Chess is a wonderful chess book -- but it's a book of games discussing the evolution of chess play up to hypermodern chess in 20s and 30s...It just is not a middlegame book for a ~1200 player! Enjoyable and aesthetically valuable, and a valuable part of a chess player's education, absolutely - It deserves all the praise pfren gave it imo, but - an efficient book to study for practical lessons in the middlegame for an advanced beginner? No, not imho, not at all.
