What is a really highly regarded budget 'classic' chess set?

In terms of value for money, which full size set (plastic or wood) would you recommend , where price is the key consideration, with an eye still on 'classic' style?

Thanks in advance

The offers out there are endless ! aways help if you a give kind of amount you would like to spend , As in the end you get what you pay for . crimson Dubrovnik from CB   is nice ,

Then there's the chess board , Or even look at buying 2nd hand on ebay for a vintage chess set .

It really depends on budget.  But HoS has some amazing classic looking budget boards for $40-$80 and chess pieces are eye of the beholder. But generally Staunton styles are solid. I would also suggest looking at board and size compatibility.

$40 Classic look

Good classic design and Tournament size

That combo would make a nice gift IMHO. Post again. If this is outside of your budget.

Budget friendly chess sets. Seek out direct Indian chess manufacturers/sellers like Chess Bazaar, Royal Chess Mall, The Chess Empire, House of Chess. There might be a few others but these are the big players of India that sell direct. House of Chess seems like one of the best options at this point due to The Queen's Gambit chess boom and Christmas. They seem to have everyone of their models still in stock.

Classic value set where price is the key consideration?

I'd go with a 4" weighted plastic set. ChessHouse has a 4-1/4" King plastic set called: Professional Series Chess Pieces. 25 bucks. Sold out at the moment. Probably because it's right after Black Friday. 3.68 pounds. Purists may feel it's a bit tight on a standard vinyl 2.25" square board. But I don't mind it. It's very similar to ChessGeek's boxed set called Best Chest Set Ever XL. Where you get the pieces and a 2.25"sq silicone board for $45-50. ChessGeek's pieces are a little heavier at 4lbs total. There's something to be said for a nice, weighted classic Staunton style plastic set. Dump them out on a park table. Throw them in a bag. No need to worry about chips, scratches and the occasional drop (gasp!).

@sooper8 There is a recent incident of The Chess Empire selling unauthorised copies The Best Chessmen ever.  Other Indian companies have a reputation for selling forgeries.  I wouldn't support unethical companies.  Do your research.

By classic style, I will assume you are referring to a "Staunton" set.  Not fantasy or other theme.  These are typically used by clubs and tournaments.  My go-to is a rollup vinyl board (green is my preference), ABS plastic pieces about 3.75" king (I prefer weighted and this can be troublesome with lower quality pieces because weights can rattle or fallout over time) and a nylon carrying bag. https://www.regencychess.ca/chess-sets/plastic/standard-club-set-3.75-king-with-brown-board-green-bag.

Silicon boards and pieces are also popular but I've not tried any.

Here I am with my plastic set getting schooled by another member from chess.com (yes... the 10yr old kid!).  On closer inspection... I'm playing on someone else's board... mine is being used by the others beside me.  Same idea though.  One of my rooks is broken.

Wood: Not comparable in price unless you want an absolute budget set with German knights.

They look spot on! Thank you

There are plenty of good quality suppliers in Britain, sooper8. Here are a couple of travel sets with wooden pieces - shame they're all sold out at the moment (no bad thing for chess as a whole, but unfortunate if you're looking for a Christmas present!):

10 Inch White Wood Folding Chess Set with Staunton Style Pieces [DG037] - £24.12 - The Regency Chess Company, The Finest Online Chess Shop

10 Inch Bookend Inlaid Golden Rosewood Chess Set [RCC022] - £49.28 - The Regency Chess Company, The Finest Online Chess Shop

and one, more expensive but from a really highly regarded company:

14" Hand Made Magnetic Folding Chess Set (officialstaunton.com)

This one is available:

10 Inch Magnetic Hand Made Wooden Chess Set (officialstaunton.com)

or you might like to see what else those and other suppliers have, but I hope they give you some ideas.

Another option to consider might be the Alegria set from Legend Products.  Very nice and not at all costly.

Apologies, I should have specified perimeters  - budget in the £20's or lower if possible. In 'normal times' I'd be down to the charity shops and jumble sales/car boot sales. That kind of budget.

I loved the look of the but shipping has put them out of range

I buy stuff from Chess & Bridge shop using their online site. They provide a great service and are based in the uk. They also have a chess set in your budget range.

I am not sure about wood or plastic but i do like a Chess Armory Magnetic Folding set, it says if you lose a piece they will send a replacement. and comes with extra queens of course. but not sure it classifies as "classic"
