If king's diameter is 1cm and height 4,5cm, what size should the chessboard's squares have?

Thank you.

Thank you.

Are you sure about those dimensions? The base seems awfully narrow unless they are magnetic (which would sort of make sense given how small the pieces are.)

Bawker

About 3/4" (2cm) or 1" (2.5cm) squares would be right for those pieces.

king's diameter is 1cm and height 4,5cm. Yes, that is what I measured. There is no chessboard for the pieces. If a chessboard should be made, I want to know the correct size of the chessboard's squares.

Bawker

On those smaller (often magnetic) pieces, the king base diameter and pawn base diameter are often pretty close.  Is your pawn diameter also about 1 cm?

The usual rule of thumb is that the king base should be 75%-78% of the square size. That would indicate a square size of only 1.28cm to 1.33cm

As I said, an extremely small set.

If it's not a magnetic set, then that king must be tipping over all the time. But if it was a set, you probably wouldn't be asking what the square size should be. Can you post a picture?

A 2cm square is to big. I have a chess set with 2cm squares. King's diameter is 1,6cm, height 4,1cm. Pawn's diameter is 1,1cm and height 2,2cm. If I put the pieces I am asking about, on the 2cm squared chessboard, they look to small. About the pieces I am asking about, pawn's diameter is 0,9cm, height 1,6cm. Notmtwain's equation sounds valid. I would say square size should be 1,4cm or 1,5cm.

The issue here is that this king is disproportionately tall compared to its base diameter. A well-proportioned king's height should never exceed about 2.5 times its base diameter. For example, for a king with a height of 3.75'' and base diameter 1.75'' (perfect for 2.25'' squares) the proportion is about 2.14, while for your king it is 4.5. So, based on a base diameter alone, a square size of about 1.3cm may appear correct, but then the king is about 3.5 times taller than the square size, which rather shouldn't be the case.

For something that small, get out some drawing software, and print chessboards of various sizes on paper until you find the right size.

Thank you for your answers. I value your opinions. I may try to print chessboards with 80% ratio between king's diameter and square size.

CornerPawn

If 4 pawns fit neatly in a square then your set is in proportion with the board. Buy triple weight pieces.

I printed chessboards in different sizes. 15mm is to small. Looks crowded. Pieces are difficult to move. 18 and 19mm squares are better. I will choose one of them.

My Opinion.....Unless you are playing in a tournament I see no reason why you can not have a board that looks crowded like they had back in the early 1900's.  I feel those large sets with the smallish boards look rather sharp that Capablanca,Lasker,Marshall and the rest of the greats played on.

If for your own enjoyment there are NO RULES.
