Hello,

I have been trying to find out the answer on my own for awhile now on a specific topic and have been unsecussfull in finding the answer. So I am asking the good people here on Chess.com if they might have an answer for me.

I am trying to find out what the best chess engine or software best is for a human to play agianst for training. I currently own Fritz 10 and Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition. I have not been playing for the last 4 years but have recently picked my board back up agian. As far as skill goes I can generally hold my own agianst fritz 10 all the way till about the 1900 range. I have noticed that many of the chess engines available today Houdini, Hiarcs, Junior all come with the Fritz 13 GUI and thats fine. That takes the aspect of which GUI is better out of consideration. I am NOT looking for a chess engine that can smash other chess engines. I have heard that Hiarcs has the most Human like playing style and am curious if this is the answer. I do not have much access to playing other chess players very often. I do not like playing players online and sometimes its just as simple as I do not have internet access.

So with all that being said,

What chess engine and/or chess software is best for Humans to play agianst for training and practice?

I know that theres possibly no replacement for playing other chess players. But there still has to be a chess engine or chess software out there that is a good alternative for humans to practice and train on to make them a better player agianst human opponents. Please provide your thoughts and/or advice. Thank You  Laughing

60% of the 2000+ players here will give you that practice for free without even telling you that you're getting it.

My Advice: Download Arena 3.0(Free GUI) and some free engines of your choice- there are many to choose from, and the nice thing about free engines is you can play many different engines with many different playing styles.  There are even certain chess engines that are designed to play gambits, play aggresively, play passively, and even engines with "styles" of famous GM's!

Why only play against one engine when there are so many available with so many styles and strengths?

Netzach: I know thats why Im saying why even bother why not just play an engine instead.

eaug97: That does sound good but I would think that if I know I am playing an engine that is just solely designed to be aggressive or passive knowing that alone would change my playing style according to the engine. I am kind of looking for one engine that plays more like a human (which is capable of playing passive and aggressive if the situation calls for it) and would make good practice for playing other people.

Try Lucaschess. It has an assortment of engines

Well, I'm not sure how much it really matters to train against a human-like engine, but maybe it would be more fun to do it that way.

My guess is probably HIARCS, and also possibly Shredder.

The newest HIARCS engine, HIARCS 14, is now being bundled with the HIARCS Chess Explorer GUI, available on the HIARCS web site. The Shredder 12 engine is available either with the native Shredder GUI (from the Shredder web site) or from Chessbase with a Fritz GUI. (If you buy Shredder from Chessbase, is the Shredder engine in UCI protocol or Chessbase protocol? idk)

If you're considering Shredder, you can download a 30-day demo of the Shredder Classic 4 GUI to try out. The demo engine is weakened some, but it's still plenty strong for training.

In general, there aren't any demo versions available for HIARCS. However, there is a free, ancient version from 1991 that's available. I don't know if it really runs in Windows (maybe you need an old version of Windows?); I just installed it as a DOS program in DosBox. I know it's really old, but maybe it would give you a feel for the HIARCS style.
