The DGT plastic version used on the last Chess Olympiad in India has 990 g.
A quadruple set can reach 2 kg…
Each piece weighs a whopping 2000 kilograms. Part of Master level chess play that is so impressive, is not just the advanced play, but the sheer ease with which they lift these 2000 kilogram pieces-it really is incredible. There have been fatalities from this, as well. As you can imagine, a 2000 kilogram pawn falls from a table, it will punch right through the floor without stopping, and do tremendous damage.
Title. I’m looking more into chess pieces but I don’t know if I should get triple or quadruple weighted pieces. Plus I’m genuinely curious just how heavy those pieces we always see on streamed high-level tournaments. The FIDE rules didn’t explicitly say anything about weight only that they should be “suitable for comfortable moving and stability.” But in general are they double or triple or quadruple? Thanks!
