What's Your Choice for Staunton Chess Set of the Year?

So far 2015 has been a great  year for collectors with the plethora of fine and wonderful new sets being offered in the market place. With that in mind, what is you choice for chess set of the year? Staunton Chess sets only. Please post pictures of your choice and reasons thereof.

Recently, Official Staunton  has made a significant impact with collectors in these forums as witnessed by its many fine reviews. With that said, my choice is the Official Staunton 4.4" Boxwood and Striped Ebony 1870 set. First of all, the pieces are finely turned and simply gorgeous. The striped ebony pieces leave an lasting impression. The boxwood pieces are unform in color and exhibit a beautiful finish and polish. And there's something special about the awesome hand carved Knights with those  pin-hole eyes. The heaviliy weighted pieces are a delight to handle. This set is visually pleasing and has a great board presence. If I had one set in my collection to use for display, this set would be it. I have included many pictures for your perusal.

Hey no fair I didn't buy that one.  Now you are making me drool, that is a really nice set. And I would and will take stripped ebony anyday that is cured properly vs. ebony that is rushed and stained black as almost ALL of it is now-a-days no matter who you get it off of. A chess manufacturer told me, which I will keep anonymous, that they stain the ebony black because Westerners demand pitch black pieces.

That is one georgeous set.  Okay even though I do not have one I will vote for this one as I haven't seen a nicer set being offered.

Also I would say to qualify it has to be a set someone can buy, as this one is, and not just one unique set.

Thanks Mike, your points are well taken

The transformer chess set.

The Staunton chess set where the knights are my little ponies looks good.

chatur thinks Staunton is another name for Optimus prime. ;)

I unpacked my 1870 yesterday night and only had the time to put it on the board and give a quick look to the pieces: the set is a beauty. I clearly vote for it.

difficult to disagree with that, really.

We know that some may disagree with us here, but we personally classify it as the new age Staunton with it's very innovative, creative, and bold design for the new future ages. Cause the thread requests "Set of the year for 2015" we think it has 2015 all over it at it's best. We'd sure love to own one.

BIG statement Mike!

Is that referring to your entire collection (including your Dubrovnik sets) or just the chess sets you picked up in 2015?

You're welcome!

to me, it's a close call between the OS 1851 and the OS 1870. Forced to chose, I'd probably pick the 1851.

on another note, I believe HoS will be coming out w/ their own version of an 1849 replica. The photos I saw looked very good. However, if the price I saw was correct, HoS will be retailing a club-size set at $3999.... Yikes.

Thanks for your opinion Frank, I  love the 1851 set too, Agreed it was hard to pick between the 2 sets, that's why I bought them both.
