Where can I get Soviet style chess pieces like these

Sort:

Hi all,

Have been scouring around the internet for ages looking for a Soviet style that looks like this -

- identifiable by the rounded hefty base, slender body which arches upwards flower-like at the "shoulder".

The queen, king and bishop are the crucial pieces here in terms of design I am looking for.

I have seen a variety of knights and rooks - not too fussy in terms of what they look like.

There are many Soviet sets on Etsy.com but just about all of them have  plastic parts, or aren't this particular version, or are the wrong size. The size I am looking for is 3,75" king (+-95mm) which I would use on a 2" squared board (50mm).

If anyone has one in good condition to sell, or has a link to such a set, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I don't see anything remotely resembling this set on their site, do you have a direct link?

Etsy?

That's where I have been looking for ages. :-( Just don't want plastic parts (which accounts for probably more than 90% of soviet sets on Etsy, esp. those with the style I'm looking for) and size must be around 3,75". I can understand why standard club sets were made with plastic parts: to make them affordable for most people, but surely there was also a market for good quality, purely wooden sets? urghh

Does anyone know if there is a specific name for this Soviet style? Or how it would be referred to in a way that would distinguish it from the many other Soviet styles between 1940 and 1980?

What is your price range?

Well it depends on what I'm getting  ... don't want to commit myself before I've seen something - I'll consider any offer.

Is this kinda what your looking for?

No. This is very different - it has a regular collar - whereas the one I have above the "collar" if you call it that, is blended with the swell of the arch above. And the finials are also not the right ones

i think etsy is your best bet. So many soviet sets there.

I have such a set that I might be willing to part with.

What about this set? https://www.etsy.com/listing/557858698/very-big-soviet-wooden-chess-giant

I have seen this set (and many many more on Etsy). It is too large and the wrong design altogether.

Here is a diagram I just made of the profile of the queen - the arrow points to the crucial part of the design (which I find particularly unique and beautiful in this family of Russian sets). Noteworthy, is the protrusion of the "shoulder" beyond the width of the head - that is the distinguishing characteristic, plus the fact that the typical collar of most Staunton and Russian sets (single, double or triple) is taken over by this protrusion which is continuous with the arched stem and forms a type of shoulder or bud supporting the head or "flower" above.

In fact I would welcome people who have such sets to post images - they are definitely a separate "family" within the Soviet style, no? (I am no expert, perhaps I am talking nonsense)

I got one like that on Chess Bazaar

Hi Kilbroney, I have looked at the entire Soviet range on CB - and I would beg to differ: they do not have the above set. The one closest is, which may be the one you bought is: https://www.chessbazaar.com/reproduced-russian-soviet-era-series-chess-set-in-stained-dyed-box-wood-3-75-king.html. This is not the same, and dare I say has little feel for the "Russian spirit". The "collar" breaks abruptly off the stem - it does not have that beautiful "s"curve. The bases are not round and hefty like the example at #1. If you mean this one, https://www.chessbazaar.com/1940-50-reproduced-soviet-era-russian-series-chess-set-revised-in-ebony-box-wood-4-4-king.html , again although it has the right type of base and s curve, the rest is uninspiring (horrible bishops), pieces are generally too thin, king is 4,4.

There is a lack of creative flair and a feel for design (I mean the knights??) Anyway I think this point has been made by others elsewhere.

The one thing in common with just about all the Russian sets, is (besides the echoing of Russian architectural motifs) a general organic, flowing quality (unlike Staunton, say). I have a few CB sets - and at least three of them are good - but no way I would buy one of their Russian sets.
