Where do you buy?

Hey all,
I'm looking to source a  board for analysis, travel and study.  Maybe around 10x10, but doesn't have to be. Ideally, a wood board... but I am really put off by the poor craftsmanship of knights I keep seeing and I don't want to settle for something that is "good enough". I want to love the look of the board and pieces.

At the moment I've been looking through Chess House, House of Staunton, Official Staunton, Chess Bazaar and Etsy...  Just wondering where you buy and would recommend?

+1.  They are the cheapest; and fast shipping too.

They usually have 15-20% off (you can use box10 for 10% off).

Awesome thank you!

Wholesale Chess is a good place and right now they do have 20% off.

I would not count out The Chess House, especially for travel and analysis sets.  Raphael, the owner, really goes out to find the best quality sets at very reasonable prices.  And they do have some travel sets that I haven't seen anywhere else.  Check them out.

My latest Chess purchase was from Wholesale Chess and they are a good company as well.

Have to agree with both Wholesale Chess and The Chess House.

I have purchased from both and been pleased with both vendors.

On a plus note, I have had a couple of issues with product from Wholesale Chess but Robyn at WSC has been fantastic with getting the issues resolved in less than 48 hours.

I know you said you wanted a wood board but I absolutely love this travel/analysis set from The Chess House. Packs away very compactly, magnets are strong, and is very nice to analyze with.

Yes, Rsava, I also own that set and it is very nice and portable.  The magnets are also really strong.

Looking at the other sets The Chess House offer there at this time presents a various nice selection for different tastes.

Thank you Rsava!  That has actually been repeatedly bubbled up to the top of my list!!   I was wondering about the longevity of milled leather (I know bonded leather doesn't last long at all).  How has it stood up to the test of time & use?

I've also been eyeing off the 8 & 12 inch versions of these:

It has stood very well indeed. The pieces still hold strong and the leather is holding well.

I love the look of the boards you posted also, but the leather set fits nicely in my suitcase when I go on the road (which is much more often than I would like, but hey it pays the bills and allows me to indulge in my hobbies).

I actually own 2 of the 3 sets you mention.

The milled leather has held up for me for many years.  It wears well.  It also comes in a nice carrying case and that is great.

You guys are awesome.  Thank you.  I think I'll pull the trigger on the milled leather!

Glad I viewed this thread just ordered the milled leather travel magnetic set myself. What I really like is the stubby major pieces and pawns for a little set are hefty. I had an old 1985 Radio Shack 1650 fast response computer type set with a magnetic playing field but that went belly up a few years back when depressing some of the playing squares weren't responding. I more or less turned it into an analysis set for home use when the electronics weren't responsive any longer. This little set will be cool to travel with and very portable. Not equipped with extra queens but not a problem at all, I rarely allow my opponent to reach promotion rank/my back rank so it isn't really necessary for this set but would've been nice to be included. Nonetheless it's a cool little set.

Milled leather is a great portable set. Some may say the pieces are too large for the squares, but you have to remember it is not a tournament set it is a travel set and one of the best. I love those stubby pieces that take up most of the square.
