Where to buy

Hello,

Just joined up at the suggestion of a friend... seems like a decent spot to make a few new friends with similar interests.

I am in the throes of deliberation over what to buy from where.  Like a few others have discovered before me - shipping into Canada from the States has become ridiculous.  I may swallow hard and pay the ransom usps is demanding this time around, but in my research for a good Canadian supplier I discovered this site.

Has anyone dealt with them?  I can't find any info or references.  I am a bit reluctant to share my cc info and drop $200 on an unknown with no assurance of their reliability or QC process before shipping these pieces.  The pieces look good in the undersized photo - I suspect the set is identical to what other suppliers are selling for much more and possibly sourced from the same Indian carver.  If they are rife with defects... I'd be a bit unhappy.  Wonder if they may be seconds?

Thanks!

If anyone has information they would like to share with me by personal message, it would be much appreciated.  Recommendations and feedback good or bad on any Canadian retailers of Chess pieces.  Specifically interested in an outfit out of Brampton Ontario that sources from India.  I am looking for a Staunton set in Ebony and Boxwood - 3.75 to 4.125 King's height.  Meticulous craftmanship very heavily weighted at a reasonable price point.

Welcome to the site. I hope you do find that this site a decent spot to make a few new friends with similar interests. I have.

I will not suggest any place to purchase any chess things, because although I have purchased from different supply site they have only been one time purchases and I don't think that is enough to recommend to someone.

Some nice sets on that site.  I can understand being hesitant, especially since the contact email is a gmail address.  You tend to think a reliable company would have a regular ISP email address rather than a throwaway anonymous gmail account.  Not to say that they're not legit and they could just be saving money, but it doesn't instill confidence.

I have found some beautiful (but expensive!) chess sets on another site (which I'm not sure I can mention here re: moderation above) which I wouldn't mind having, but right now I'm kind of hard pressed to plop down $350 for a chess set.

If I had woodworking tools and plenty of time on my hands, I'd try making my own set.  But maybe that will have to wait about 25 years after I retire.

The set I fell in love with is the Heritage chess set in red sandalwood (google that and you'll find it).  But unless I win the lottery I'll probably not ever buy one.

My favorite chess set is the hand carved folding set I bought in the Philippines many years ago.
