Also good at your level is "The Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played: 62 Masterpieces of Chess Strategy" aslo by Irving Chernev.

I agree - Chernev's book is AWESOME! Another book that is very similar but will give you a bit more depth is Russian Chess by Bruce Pandolfini. The book covers six games, with comments and questions related to every move. I promise you will learn. I also like Pandolfini's endgame book, but get that when you're interested in studying that portion of the game.
My favorite book is Emanual Lasker's Manual of Chess. All of the books recommended are good, this just happens to be my personal fave.
The public library is free, that is my suggestion. Sorry to all the chess book authors........

To be honest raul72, I'm your biggest fan here, crankiness, stupid pills, and all the attitude notwithstanding.
I think it's a waste of your knowledge to be so confrontational in the forums. Think about how much more could be achieved if you had an attitude that people wanted to talk with you constructively.
Still, you are satisfying your appetites here with the way you do things, no doubt. It doesn't bother me as I'm not one of those who breaks into tears when daddy raises his voice above a whisper, and insists that everyone wear their happy face, their dumb happy face regardless of the context.
A good flame here and there is useful, I think, as well as entertaining.

Well I will say this---isnt it enough that Nunn borrowed the title from Chernev. Does he have to run him down and demean his playing ability in the introduction to his book. I asked you why it was not the most efficient because I knew you would be unable to answer that question. Of course Nunn can run down Chernev's reputation. Nunn was in the top ten for years.
But let me conclude with---to hell with Nunn. I'll keep reading Chernev's version of Logical Chess, move by move and let you egg heads have Nunns books!!

Hello.
I am just asking for some quick advice on what are the best chess books for someone around my level - my chess.com rating is around 1100. Basically, I know all the rules and basic tactics, but everything else is pretty much beyond me. I'd prefer if the book was about general chess, rather than focusing solely on the opening or endgame.
