Which chess set has, in your opinion, the best looking Knight?

I am roughly 18 month’s into playing the game of chess - so my comments must be taken with a grain of salt - I am not an expert by any measure. A newcomer, now addicted to the game!

I possess three sets only and my taste is what I might call: ‘classic with a hint of flair’. I am not so big on some of the more obscure designs nor some of the super intricate carving - albeit I admire the craftsmanship. It’s balance of utility and style, for me.

I read this article on historical designs earlier: 5 Historial Designs

And the two knights in this article that I am most attracted too are the Dubrovnik... I generally prefer the knight with its head bowed down ... and the Daniel Weil set!! I know... what!!... I know it’s a polarising knight ... but there something about it that has slowly grown on me - and yet, it’s head is not tilted down and it’s abstract in design!! It cuts against what I generally like but ... I really like it. It looks like a robust, comfortably playable set too.

Thanks for the thread excellent to see the variations from everyone. 👍

Got something old to share again, with more info this time. The set is so old it has knights and elephants:

I'm hopeful!  I love your Macel Duchamp!

I was surprised to be quite taken with the Knights in the Romanian-Hungarian National Tournament Chess Set from Chess Bazaar.   I've been eyeing off Knights with really action-packed manes recently...  but these kept drawing me back to look. I don't know why:

They are not my favourites...  but I found them appealing.

I love the design of this set particularly the knights.

I also like that knight mister B. Like it very much.

There are certainly many beautiful knights being offered in today's market. I personally prefer the designs from mid 19th century to very early 20th century,

I really like the French warrior knights. Also, the rest of the set looks the best.

English plowhorse knight.

Fun! Where are they from?

I don’t know about the single-best looking knight; for one, the knight has to fit the other chess pieces. But I think the knights of the Austrian Coffeehouse reproduction are really beautiful. They’re elegant, lifelike, and I like their asymmetry with the mane going to the left side.

I also really enjoy Soviet knights, which show quite a diverse range of attitudes and eccentric designs. One knight I’ve been really enamored with is the reproduction of the 15th-century Novgorod knight in the Jacobson Handmade Chessmen set. Arguably more of a hybrid between a xenomorph and Anubis, but how cool is this? Even a bit goofy with that tongue sticking out.

I also really enjoy this knight from a 1970s “Gabrielez” Spanish Staunton set owned by Vikhram Ravi. I like its small muzzle. The head reminds me of something, although I don’t know what. Maybe some character from the Dark Crystal, or some other fantasy-themed work. Either way, I like how dreamy it looks.

The Ruffian American knights are so strange to me; they look like zombie horses.

I like the Knights from my old Botvinnik-Flohr 2 set. They look more like puma (cougar) than a horse head. They are also well-balanced with just the right weight for their size and the set matches my 2.25" board.

These CHAVET Knights are known for their aesthetic beauty, simple but elegant design, well-balanced and stable pieces that are just weighted right and are really a pleasure to play with. The Jura boxwood that they are made from has the ability to show crisp wood grain details when carved, and in combination with a nice patina naturally gain with age and usage, the authentic CHAVET manufactured set is truly a classic worth keeping for generations.

England, probably around 1870.

the one where you underpromote to a knight but you have both knights on the board
