Which Chess Set is used on the Netflix Series "The Queen's Gambit" ?

SOLVED: Found out what set and board it was after tons of research and help from the forums! Thanks everyone!

Does anyone know which chess set this is. This is the board they used in last episode in Soviet Era Russia. I understand it is a Latvian / Soviet era style board, it has an "opp top" for the queen and the king only. The bishops do not have a tapered top like I've seen on online searches. Also the Knight has smooth wide back that tapers. Any help appreciated!

I don't know the answer, but some company selling pieces needs to identify the sets used in the series and start selling them with "as soon on Queen's Gambit!"

Latvian. Search the forums for a similar posting.

@sound67 - I think the King, Knights and the Bishops are wrong on that set you show.

In the set from the movie, the point on the King's finial is pointier (curved inward right at the top), the Bishop point is less pronounced, and the Knight is blockier.

I assume he is looking for the specific set since he'd already correctly identified the style. So the question remains: which set was used?

That is what I have assumed (which may be bad on my part) as well, the specific set.

While I love "Soviet-Latvian" sets (I have two old ones myself), the one in the movie really does strike the right chord for me. I would purchase one if it were available.

Yeah that is the one. It's amazing how people will get hung up on variations. Made by hand you will get variations.

I'll have to re-watch, but I'm pretty sure that this set was used: https://thechessstore.com/russian-1940-antique-reproduction-chess-set-golden-rosewood-boxwood-pieces/ The skinny waist of the Bishop caught my eye.

And also this one: https://thechessstore.com/the-dubrovnik-championship-chess-set-with-ebonized-boxwood-pieces-3-9-king which is definitely appropriate to the period.

I wouldn't be surprised if other sets from that site were also featured.

The set linked in the picture in the OP's post has quite a few significant differences from the Chess Store set, though I do like the look of it!

Aside from the many beautiful table-top sets used in "The Queen's Gambit" I'm trying to track down the "mini" chess set seen in several scenes from the movie as well... a boxed set, peg-board style with hinged cover (appears to be all wood, metal piano hinge -- from memory at the moment). If anyone has any thoughts on where one can be found (or something very similar) I would be grateful.

My apologies for interrupting this thread, it just seemed a natural place to ask.

I don't remember that specific set well, but search for "pegged chess set" and the like and you will find a variety, used and new. For example:

etc!

Is this the one you're referring to?

Thank you so much!! It does appear to be a “sovtet” Russian Travel/Pocket Chess Set (or similar descriptions)... and yes the one from the captured scene.

I appreciate the links to these stores. I found the Etsy ones but not the others.

Ah knoodlebug and others, you've been of great help! Does anyone know what kind of board that is and how to find it?

manfred_scriba_ms07

Here's my wild guess.

Resembles this.

Will the makers ever reveal what chess sets have they used?

It is very annoying that all of your links are "shareasale" links. "Shareasale" is a notorious tracking site and many browsers/track blocking add-ons block the link.

Can you just post normal links to the sets you post about?

It's not absolutely correct to call this chess set Latvian. Original Latvian chess set made in 1950s had more appealing and sophisticated look. The chess set played by Harmon and Borgov is much newer and over-simplified for mass production Soviet chess set of 1980s. Some chess men indeed resemble original Latvian chess men
