Just found these two sets. I'll review them when they arrive from Moscow.

Looks like great additions to your Russian set collection Chuck. What's the king height on both?

They are represented to be 11 cm, or 4.33 in. I think these shots depict one of them. At least they share some of the design elements.

You have to get bald first and then grow long hair to cover up your baldness.

Last year I bought this set, from an eBay seller located in Riga.

your set looks fanatstic!  Do you know the age of the set?  And what's the height of the Kings?

Here's some pics of my 1941  set. Surface of board is in rough shape. Pieces in good shape with some wear to the black finsh pieces. Kings measure 4 1/8" in height. Pawns at 2 3/8" in height. Pieces unweighted but wide bases afford good balance. TY for the name and the link. I just spent some time looking at all the chess sets and there are a few sets I would like to buy some day. Too bad no one in the USA is a wholesaler of the sets. Would be nice to have prices and more details of the sets. Looks like all the sets I saw come with a board and storage under the board. Hard even to say what prices they would be selling for since none were listed.

If I am ever in Russia I will surly leave a couple chess sets heavier!!!

Terrific set, Mike. I especially love the stout Rooks. The board has enormous character.

Great set! I'm sure is a joy playing with those pieces.

Here is a link to a Russian chess maker: Kadun

I attach  a picture of their Retro 60's set.

Info, isn't that the same design as your set from Riga pictured above?

Mike, you have to email Kadun for the prices. Find the email link, email them a request for information, and someone will respond in a day or two. They're very expensive--$600-$700 plus shipping as I recall--and small--the Kings are about 2.5 inches.

I just received an email from Kadun after inquiring about the cost of their 60s retro set. $576 and $110 shipping to the US.

This is the design that comes to my mind whenever "Soviet Chess Set" is pronounced. It's an archetype IMHO. The pieces are stylish yet stable due to their wide base. Wonderful chess set!!

Hi, I found this site while trying to find out about a chess set i found, I'm more of a collector than a player , I picked up this set today in a charity shop and to me it looks very much like set #4 at the beginning of this thread, apart from the rooks look slightly different at the top, Also is anyone able to tell me what the label in the board says .

Thanks Nick
